I would like to ask, whether a waterproof case for a GoPro (Hero 8) camera is a necessity while windsurfing. GoPro claims its cameras to be waterproof up to 10 meters depth. Is it enough to withstand crashes or do you use a waterproof case for extra insurance?
My GoPro 5 Black is also waterproof. I have used it for windfoiling without a case many times. No problems. I don't know if a case for an already waterproof GoPro is even available.
No problem with my hero 5 session except... when the door opened when flipping the sail at the beach start! The small door is harder to open on my replacement model and I'm more careful when starting off. Hundreds of sessions on both cameras.
Thank you for the replies! It is good to know that these cameras withstand the impact of water while windsurfing without an extra case (there are waterproof cases which people use for deep diving, so I was considering to get one of these).
By the way, do you use some rope or something to tie the camera to the boom or to the helmet so that the camera would not get loose and sink in case of a hard crash? Or is the standard mounting strong enough to avoid these kind of situations?

Highly recommended to tie the camera with a rope to something.
I didn't do and my headmounted Hero 7 went down the sea when I made a catapult.
At least it happened in the holy waters of Hookipa in Maui. Best grave for a windsurfers camera :-).
My Hero 8 is now always tied to everything :-).

Broke my bike mount a few times. I attach a leash to the hinge of the mount case door. Worked really well.
Yes, always recommended to use a leash to an expensive camera. I use a meter long coiled key leash.
