I use small waveboards for GPS + B J but was wondering how different would they feel to ride?
Say I had a 70ltre speed board / slalom / waveboard?
I know the waveboard would be easier to use but more comfortable in chop which is why I use them but in flatwater? I sail low down to the water and outboard as much as I can.
A slalom will have a harder less forgiving ride. It will also be much faster, twitchy and less robust. It may also overtake your sail when going hard (depending on what you are using). A freeride will be just little bit slower but easier to use. Both will let you sail outboard and off the fin. FSW and Freewave style boards will be easier still, but rail shape under your back foot will not be as comfortable when sailing out board. Wave boards are the slowest and don't encourage outboard sailing at all. The slaloms and freeride will jump on the plane very quickly, the FSW and wave you have to work harder to get going.
Some modern freeride boards are very quick but retain control and soft feel. I love freeride boards and only have one slalom (which I bought for peanuts).

Overtake your sail?
Would you notice the harsher ride of the faster boards in flatwater? Do waveboards track similarly to the others in flat water?
If you truly want better GPS results then you have to go the slalom/speed board track.
A small slalom probably is first step. A speed board has an acceleration rate that could be intimidating if you are not used to smaller slalom boards first.
Also the speed boards seem to need a different stance, that if you have not had the experience of working a slalom way off the wind, may also be a big jump.
As for how they feel. A good quick slalom board makes you feel the need.

I got a old styroteck freeride 260/56/79 vol its the board l bring out in nuclear conditions. Its got plenty of vee & a Pintail. I rate this board in any conditions people sometimes frowned at it l got a small slalom board but l find the freeride a dream to use FREERIDES get my tick!

Better still throw a freebie + van to carry it.. No really I will get a go on one .Probably more likely at Canton in winter.
