Hi all

Does anyone who wears contact lenses on the water have any brand recommendations? I have some daily disposables (Acuvue Trueye) which are super thin and comfortable for day wear but (perhaps because of their thin-ness) are not great in salt water and go quite filmy, turning me virtually blind on a bad day.

Cheers

I used to wear them in the surf but can't really help you with brands as that was years ago.. never had any hassles with them filming up and they were dailies I think Acuvue..

I think they should be a reasonable fit on the eye, where they don't move around much. In the past, when I would get water in them, there was no problem, but I did notice that the fit did vary a little bit between brands.

What do you mean by 'filmy'?

I lost my normal ( expensive) lens the first time I went in the surf and opened my eyes as a wave came through..dur.. Got $10 disposables after that and no worries ( also remembered to close my eyes when wiped out...)

By filmy I mean like it's as if the salt water reacts with the contact lenses and creates a film over the lens that makes it cloudy and hard to see through - wondered whether this was a problem with particularly thin lenses or something. Sounds like it's not a common problem though, so I'll try another brand out.
Thanks

I have been using Johnson and Johnson 1 day acuvue moist for the last two years and never had any problems with them falling out. They have a UV blocking feature also. Now if only they came polarized lol.

I wear B&L Prevision 30 day lenses. They are expensive but they are excellent. I've never had any problems in salt water but you need to be careful in the fresh water lake where i sail mostly. When I was a bit younger I also wore them playing rugby and never lost a 30 day sense but I lost heaps of the fortnightly ones Highly recommended.

I've been using B&L SofLens daily disposables for windsurfing for more than 5 years now and never had any problems.

I've tried the Acuvue fortnightly and daily, both are fine, it's just cheaper when I loose the daily ones.

Get a bit of movement in them sometimes but just blink a lot to sort them out.

Annoying when you loose one, worse thing was on a really windy day with sand blowing around in the car park, grit in the eye is terrible with contacts.

I am using contact lenses for windsurfing ever since (started in 1979). Never used dailies, I am OK with my usual monthlies, now I am using CooperVision 55 aspheric, really great, tough enough to withstand the occasional wiping to get clear of salt and water, great optical performance. Anyhow it's a matter of fit to each one's eyes, one has to test a few ones in order to find what's good for him.

Thanks all. Reckon I'll go and get some trial samples to test out. Cheers

I have been wearing contacts daily for 30 years: windsurf, surf, snorkel, whitewater kayak, swim, shower, etc. Take them out at night though.
Have been using the Acuvue for quite a few years now. They are the the 2 week ones, but I find that if you clean them regularly, especially after salt water use, they can last up to 6 months, therefore work out quite cheap. They are also UV proof. So they claim.

That turning filmy thing doesn't sound good.
