I'll be visiting WA for a fortnight windsurfing holiday in mid-late Jan. I was going to bring the following with me:

1 x 86 litre Fanatic Freewave
1 x 5.7m single cam sail
1 x 5m wave sail

I weigh 74 kilos.

I am not coming with the idea of going wave sailing, looking instead to do blasting and B&J. I'll be spending a week in Perth itself visiting Safety Bay, Lancelin and the Swan River; and will also spend week in Geraldton sailing in Gero itself and visiting Coronation Beach.

My question is will this gear be adequate or am I going to get blown off the water – esp. in Geraldton?

All and any advice will be much appreciated.

you could easily get blown of the water in gero/lano on that gear but should be fine in perth. I'd recommend bringing a 4.2/4.5 as well

over such a short period, weather could go either way-but I have a 4.6 and 5.2 and I weigh a little more than you!
Chances are you'll get flattened in gtn at that time unless you get something smaller.

agree with above.

If the weather is really on in Gero you'll be down to 3.7 no problems if you are 74kgs on a 86L.

Conversely, on the days in Perth where u only just get a seabreeze you'll really want that 5.7

Thanks for these viewpoints guys. I'll have to work something out. Maybe I should just hire stuff.

Can you hire just a sail up there?

Actually, I need two new sails in the 5.3 and 4.7 range. I could buy these while I was over there (I like the look of the KA Kults in those sizes).

Does anyone have an opinion on whether a 5.3 and a 4.7 would be a good pairing for Perth and Geraldton in January?

(once again i'm 74kg and will be using an 86 litre fanatic freewave)

In Gero most guys your weight are riding 70-75L boards and using 4.0 -5.5 sails. 4.7 and 5.3 is a good bet but the way it has been blowing here recently (30-40knts) you will definately need 4.0 or smaller (especially on an 86 L board). Crew have been overpowered on 4.2 from 3.00pm onwards.
G-Spot has a good range of smaller sails. New (Severne and Simmer) and also good quality used sails. Rentals also available.
