I was out in glorious sun today minding my own buisiness in 5 to 10 kts on my Mistral One Design , 9.4
Then out of nowhere the wind increased to 15 to 20 kts . So instead of changing boards I just slid mast back all the way and no CB . It was awesome fun until the swell grew to 1.5 m and started to get airborne . It's fun in a strange way fanging a freight train like a small board .![]()
My question is , should I be doing this or am I going to break something .? The 40 cm glass US box fin was on my mind as well as the noise the whole thing was making smashing over the water .
Ps : I'm not light .
Steve Allen looped his raceboard in front of me at the nationals years ago and split it in 2.
just go for it. Lifes to short and gear is built to be tested.
Answer yes you can jump but how you land! Bend your knees and absorb chop.
Forward looping is hard on your board, boom or body.
Creased bottom, bent boom, black eye and broken nose. Most landings ok!
Imax1 ive launched my Mistral Imco n my Speed Rb skywards quite a few times. About 8ft under the nose n 2ft under the fin.. just land it tail first. Sweeeet!!!!
What's all this talk about looping ?
Thats not intentionally going to happen .
It just feels and sounds like I'm killing it . It handles it OK , it's just hard work strengthening it up when it gets out of line .
I do get a chuckle trying to ride the swell back in
, it's like surfing a filing cabinet ![]()
sure you can jump it ....its the next day when the ankles start screaming ,you know
yeah maybe to big ..
on the other hand the bigger the ship the bigger the sea it will handle .![]()
also if the wind gets under it ,its best to abandon ship rather than ride the storm .
Or if you're not fussed with looping your race gear and just want to do a normal jump, Robby says you can do this.....
In an old Neil prude video I think Naish loops one
I believe based on the footstrap placement and tail shape (winged squaretail) this would be an 86-88 Mistral Equipe XR LCS rather than the 1989-1993 Equipe. I say that not to diminish the achievement just to confirm it is not the Mistral One Design nor the later Equipe(s).
Yep the mistral one design is bullet proof and can be jumped or even looped all day long. As a kid sailing in Sydney harbour we used wait around off Greenwich for a ferry to pass and then launch our IMCOs at the wake as fast as we could, no damage ever.
However fast forward to today and I would never jump my current starboard phantom raceboard, I feel like that thing could easily snap in half at any moment.
