I'm thinking of buying a Tabou Rocket 105 and wonder if I can use my 7.6m MauiSails TR-7 on the board?

I suspect it'll be fine with my 6.6m.... but I'm hoping it'll be sweet with my 7.6m.

The Tabou website suggests a maximum range of 4.5 - 7.0.

Any thoughts out there?

Hi,

I have I think a 2005 105l Rocket. The biggest sail I've used on it is a 6.6m sail. I think it could handle a larger sail of over 7m however compared to other boards of similar volume it's a little narrower. I'm a bit hesitant to put a bigger sail up.

It's a lovely board. A friend of mine had a go on it in about 30 knots of wind and a 5.3m sail on Saturday. The board was too big for the conditions but it's the smallest watertight board I have. He said it is very smooth into the gybes and does not bounce out.

I guess the new boards are a little different to the older ones.

To narrow for a 7.6! Even with a bigger fin you will find the board will start to rail up when powered up . I would Say the limit would stop at 7.2 talk to Daniel at 2nd wind attadale he will know for sure ? Happy sailing

What do you weigh??
If your light enough, say around 70-85 kgs then go for it. Lots of sailors use big sails on smaller boards. Manufacturers put basic guidelines on boards but that doesnt mean that you take it as gospel.
Try different things, you might be pleasantly surprised!!

id guess it will be fine ive used a 8.4 on a 64cm wide board and although it wasnt ideal its better than not planing on a smaller sail .

the 105 comes with a 34 cm fin
that's about 6.x for me
for 7-oh i use 40 cm fin and a 7.6 TR should have about a 44 cm fin
i would be surprised if anyone puts a 44 cm fin on this 105

also, people may NOT realize the TR 7.6 is more like an 8-oh !!!
if you already have the toys, try it, butt i am NOT sure i would buy into such a combo

lotsa luck !!

I have a rocket 105 and it feels quite balanced with a Gaastra Savage 7.2

The Tr-7 7.6 is only a bit longer at 209cm boom length and it should be more stable - bigger fin would probably help upwind

If you plan to race then a more modern slalom board would be a better match but the rocket is quite an easy board to jump on

If you plan to blast around on open ocean swells like I do, then the extra length is good

At 90 kgs a 7.6 tushingham X-15 works fine on my 2012 rocket 105 ltd.
You will have to concentrate on mast base pressure and keeping the board flat more than the 125 ltd (what i normally plug into the 7.6) but on flattish water is no problem.
A 42 freerace fin and happy days!

I have a mate in our gps team who loves using a NP 7.5 cambered sail on his 105 Rocket. He reckons it is a really sweet combination.

He uses his 135 Excite Ride when it's barely windy, but as soon as that gets too bouncy he switches boards to the Rocket and goes really well.
He is 6'4" and about 92kgs.

I'd say go for it with the double back strap and a decent fin.

From the tenor of the myriad of fantastic replies I'm gathering that sailing a 7.6m race sail on the Tabou Rocket 105 is not the best combination... but is possible with my 200kg frame.

I'm thinkin' that unless I get to try it out first, it might be an unwise decision to buy before I try.

Many thanks to all for the valuable input.

Cheers!!

I use a TR8 7.6 on isonic 97L - 63.5cm wide with a 38cm fin. Works well. How wide is the rocket 105?

Try to borrow a 7.6 sail. Give it a go if it work,s with your board buy the sail. I will be interested with the 'result. That's the beauty of this gr8 sport! Enjoy!

Hey Cecil. Just to add my 2cents. I have never seen or ridden a Tabou, but I ride a similar sized board (in litres).

I use an 8m Hot Sails Maui GPS on my 99 Falcon with a 36cm fin. 38cm if the wind is gusty and not as strong. The 99 Falcon is 62 wide. Works really well with an 8m in flat or chop. I am 92 kg

how do you guys do this ??
i use my MauiSails MS-2 8-oh free race sail with 2 cambers in 20 to 40 kph winds
ie 15+ knots
this is on a FreeFormula or 160 liter free ride
with my 100 kilos
have thought of using it on my 124 liter 63 cm wide board, butt would be trickier in gybes/jibes and tacks
i cannot imagine myself on a 105 sinker and a TR or MS sail close to 8-oh !!!
YOU GUYS ARE GOOD and probably have steadier winds !!!!

I use an 8.6m loft racing blade sail on my 91L 59cm wide board (exocet rs2) with 35 or 39cm fin. Just think of it as a speed board for a big sail!
