Hello , I am just about to attempt to regrip my chinook carbon boom with new EVA unifiber grip ,I have watched all the excellent videos on here , just wondered if anybody has used spray contact adhesive or is it better to "stick" to using a pot/brush?
also what brand is best one to go for , unifiber recommend Bison Tix , but cant get that in the UK.
cheers John
brilliant thats good to know , going to try the "thinners" trick today to strip the old grip - wish me luck
Good luck and keep us posted! I've got a boom that needs regrip but stayed away from it because I thought it was a terrible job. Hope it's not too bad and I'll consider doing it too.
The shrink-on boom grip from Lisa is a first rate product and very, very easy to install. If you don't mind a little extra weight and prefer a slightly larger grip you can even install it right over your current grip. A little pricey but worth it for the foolproof installation.
So , boom successfully re gripped !! it was relatively straight forward, the worst part was stripping the old grip , i got some plastic tubular bag from ebay (similar to the bag that comes covering the boom arms) and used thinners which was a game changer, needed a second soaking to get rid of the glue residue . I ended up getting some neoprene based waterproof contact cement (Bison kit/ tix) which was brilliant to work with. i used a gloss roller to apply which gave a even spread . Applying the grip was painless , using a rubber wallpaper roller to get rid of air bubbles and then a "penny roller" to bed in the seam. All of this tips came from other users and were spot on . Finally sanding with a mix of 120/180 grit. I can honestly say the boom looks brand new , and i wouldn't hesitate to do it again .
