Although I think i know the answer to this, but does anyone make a heated boom? I'm finding my hands are getting cold from the boom on cooler mornings. I've tried wetsuit gloves, and that helps some. But just wanted to see if this was even a thing.
Could be powered by a wind generator at the top of your mast. ![]()
Long extension chord ?
The power consumption could be the problem. The lee side of boom, not shielded by fingers, would be like a giant, slow , hot wire anemometer. It could be used to measure the apparent wind!

Heated gloves would keep the heat contained.

Have a look at this:

Open palm mittens heated by the warm air you exhale!
Haven't tried it, but have only heard good reviews.
But really, how cold does it get where you live?
This winter I didn't really get along well with my gloves, so removed them and found that you can get away with bare hands even in astonishingly cold conditions as long as the rest of the body is warm.
I rember a few years back in a 35 knot plus onshore NW wind I could not do a water start on the river as the waves and chop made it very difficult.
I had my winter 3/2 suit and the temperature was like 15 C .
After around 30 minutes of paddling and swimming and then walking another 5 minutes back to my car I was frozen and exhausted.
I turned the engine and heater on full.
My hands and body were shivering pretty bad.
I remember thinking good job I had chosen to wear the warmer of my two 3/2 suits.
Another day back around 1990 whilst sailing at the Shelley River my hands in a matter of minutes after an hour of sailing became red and I could not hold the boom anymore.
When I got home I happened to be watching the weather and the temperature had dropped from around 17C to something like 9 C in a matter of minutes.
Windsurfing with cold hands is not fun. With gloves you lose a lot of feel but no alternative.
Standard food handling gloves are all you need, nice and thin so doesn't affect your grip and cuts the wind chill completely. Because a small amount of water eventually ends up in them your body temp keeps your hand insulated. Don't knock it till you try it.
WTF??? Here we go. Gel heatpacks inserted in boom.
KABOOM!! Remove bung from boom.Click the lil clicker thing in the heatpack tie a string on one end, slide it in using tailpiece. Hey Presto!!! Toasty digits for righteous comfy sailin.![]()
KABOOM Tm n Patent pending. Registered to DarkArt Industries. Hehehe....
My gloves always smell fishy after a long day's sailing.
Take your gloves off before you handle your fins.
Try a pair of latex gloves. Very thin so no forearm pump and they prevent windchill, cheap too.
I sometimes use use them in the UK winter, they do make a big difference.
Fortunately, I keep a spare pair in the fun box under our bed!!

This thread is full of WIN!!! funny stuff here! So, a long extension cord, or mount a snowmobile engine to power a heating element on the boom. Got it!
So the ambient air temps aren't bad to deal with, but the boom seems to be colder (it's an alloy). I wonder if the thermal properties of a carbon boom would help.... hmmmm... need more stuff!
I own a rip curl h-bomb heated vest that's been discontinued for some time. I love it especially when derigging and packing (battery lasts approximately 2 hrs)! Under the wetsuit, it heats the upper and lower back where there's a lot of blood flow close to the skin. When your blood is warm it's pumped to your extremities and you don't get cold hands and feet.
There are superior but more expensive products such as
www.abyss.com.au/shop/dive-gear/en/product/thermal-wear/heated-vests/thermalution/15m-surf-s-sleeve-14252... I guess it depends on how big a problem it is for you - I think it would have helped the red bull storm chasers a lot :).... I use mine with my summer wetsuit (3/2) at the start of the winter and my flash bomb plus 4/3 is warm enough even for coldest Port Phillip Bay days.
Pogies ! Didn't know that's what they're called. For well-informed feedback see Jono Dunnetts blog about windsurfing around Europe. He used them when he started in Northern Norway.
Maybe kitesurfing might be a better sport for you.

Hey now... Thems is fighting words.... LOL. I did have a few kite setups... I live in a spot where water access is scarce, and if there's a beach, half of the population will be on it. We have restrictions against 'arial' sailing... long story short, I switched back to Windsurf/foiling. But you have a cute cat.

Your life will never be the same once you go carbon.![]()
FTW!!! I just located and purchased a carbon boom.
