Another 'what goes on under the grip' post, this time regarding a well known brand of alloy boom which has had only low to moderate use freeride sailing since I purchased it new sometime in spring 2013. Just recently, I noticed strange bulges in the grip at the back end. Cut the bulges open and found a sticky gooey substance closest to the alloy (possibly remnants of the glue?) with the remainder of the bulge being white powder (the grip inside the lock collar also showed signs of bulging, along with corrosion once I removed the grip material). Have NEVER witnessed corrosion this bad on any boom I've owned in over 30 years of windsurfing, let alone one that's only two sailing seasons old! Anyone reckon it's still usable?
I have one of those. Purchased in 2012 and not much used. I was just wondering the same thing. After having a big alloy break on me waaaay out to sea, I have swapped over to carbon.
I reckon if the corrosion was bad it would have lifted the plastic also. I think that is just surface corrosion but yeah OK I would not take it wavesailing.
For all they get dismissed nowadays, I did 5 seasons on a Chinook alloy, always overpowered, broke 3 masts and my shoulder on it. Given to a grom and still in use 6yrs later.

Yeah, think the plastic collar has lifted a bit. Had recently decided my next alloy boom will be a Chinook. Can't justify the cost of a carbon boom considering the amount of times I get out windsurfing in a year!

Forget it, nearly $1200 or 3 1/2 times the price of a Chinook alloy boom! With the difference I could get a new sail as well, or two good secondhand ones. Not everyone on this forum has money to burn!
