Any local Taranaki boys or girls here on Seabreeze? Surfing is obviously huge on the Taranaki Surf Highway, but where are the good spots to wing surf (or kite or windsuf)? Are there some local hangouts? Looking for something intermediate or with a half decent chance to get out past the massive shore break...

Or do I have to go back to SUP surfing and leave the wing and foil at home?

Cheers!

I was so into the Taranaki that I ended up buying a place on the coast with mates, for wave sailing, surfing, tow in and snowboarding, that had for 5 years before selling.
There are so many spots and comes down to access to the coast, so depending on the wind direction with the coastline there will be places to launch. There are only a few beaches but most are rocky so you are going to get tough feet.
Starting at Waitrara is good in SW and probably the most intermediate.
Down the coast is normally running 3m swell
Weld Road SW
Kina Road NW/SE
There are other spots ...

As mentioned above, there are plenty of spots, and one of them will work on nearly any given day, either for surfing or some windsports. That's the beauty of Taranaki. The downside is the lack of sandy beaches - but hey, reef breaks generally produce the nicer and more consistent waves. If you find yourself on a spot by yourself - you're possibly on the wrong spot.
We organise regularly trips to Taranaki where we introduce people to the different spots. They are mainly aimed at experienced windsurfers, but if you find yourself there when we are, feel free to get in touch, happy to help out with advise :-)
