A smaller fin helps as well...

Yes that is why I also asked for more info. If he is on a 40cm fin and a 5.7 he may just need a new fin and the 5.7 will be managable if it is is more 20kn and not so many gusts to 30.

At the moment the question is non specific, and so we get 20 replies posting their favourite sail - not necessarily what EvilC actually may need.

So EvilC - what fin size? Existing sails? Mast/s?
What skill level &x28;are you nailing all your carve gybes or still tacking/falling in? Waterstarts? Planing all the time with ease, no rounding up etc?
and maybe KenHo's q'n too - are you sure it is getting to 30? &x28;that is a LOT of wind for a 110L board and a 75kg fella. I am 90kg and get onto a 75l comfortably in that wind&x29;

guys, respect to all for trying to help but what the?

from red thumbs to green thumbs to buy a new board, buy a smaller fin, buy a wave sail, buy a freeride sail, buy an rdm mast, buy xply and on and on.

all clive wants is to replace his busted sail which was a 5.5m, he busted a panel, got it fixed and then a couple of us spent 15 minutes or so trying to get his repaired sail back up and working as the battens had issues, then he put in the mast and the head disintegrated.

so he wants to replace his sail.

Well like I said he asked "what is a good sail for 20-30kn freeride" which is very non specific.
Of course we then had a sh!teload of differing responses
I thought he was a rank beginner wanting to buy his first small sail, which if he has a 100L and a 5.5m, and is using a 40cm fin, he may be better off buying a smaller fin only.
If he already has a 4.5, 5.5 and 7m he would be better off buying a small board.
If we knew that extra info, responses may have been different

Seeing as though you are experienced Gestie, and you know where he is at and what he does he'd be better just asking you and running with that.

yep, i understand your point mark and i wasn't having a go at you specifically, it was more a general comment about the thread on the whole when the opening question was about a sail.

Ezzy.

Confused yet evilC?

Let's start with what you already have: a 100 litre, freeride board.
What else?

This is important as you want to extend the range of your current quiver, not make a hole, or double-up on sails.

Personally I reckon a 6m freeride and a 36cm fin will make a nice addition as I live down the road and we rarely get 30 knots, plenty in the 18-25 range though (fingers crossed)).

I know that Gestie.........typical story for the interweb though. Ask what is a good sail, for a specified discipline, and you will get heaps of ppl post about their favourite board or a particular brand is the ducks nuts (but never qualifying that remark with why)

... and I think 6m is the smallest I'd go on a 100l freeride board.

Thanks everyone for your help.

I currently have the following gear:

1 year old 110L JP excite-ride.
Second hand 7.4 KA Koyote which I rig on a 460 mast and 43cm fin.
1 year old 6.7 Neilpryde Tempo which I rig on a 430 mast and 34cm fin.
Second hand 4.2 ezzy sail that rigs on a 400 mast (used for kids on old Bic melody), might get to use it in 30+ knots one day.
29cm freestyle fin.

I have been windsurfing for nearly a year. Can water start, straps in intermediate position and harness all good (haven't catapulted for 6 weeks ). Not close to carve gybes yet, maybe next year....

I am going to get a 5.3 KA Koyote to put on the 400 mast and maybe try the 29cm freestyle fin.

What and why
I've got a 110 litre Carve, essentially the same as your board.
I weigh 80kg. I sail same conditions as you, down the road (The Cold Toast).

I really love my 5.9 KA Koyote and MFC 36cm Liquid Pro on my very similar board.

1. You've already got the 7.4 so you're familiar with it.
2. You've already got a mast to fit.
3. That fin will do.
4. It's x-ply.
5. It's easy-peasy to handle for your skill level.
6. It's fast.
7. They're easy to find (email KA and see if you can't get one of last year's for cheap)
8. I think there'd be a gap if you bought a 5.3: 7.4, 6.7, 5.3. You'll use the 5.9 more I think.

RDM vs SDM
I rig the Koyote on a 430 RDM, although I used to rig it on a 430 SDM. I think it actually had a better top end with the SDM, but the RDM is 100% carbon vs 30% on the SDM, so it is always favoured. PLus the boom is already set to fit it.. yada yada/lazy.

What about drop-shape? Best of both worlds. I've got one for the 7.2 Koyote and I really, really like.

KA Koyote
Actually, while on the Koyote It's a fricken' powerhouse with little downhaul and very fast and slippery with a lot. Fantastic free-ride/race sail.

Masts again
What mast is the 430? I rig my Koyotes on a NP RDM and a North Drop-shape. Both are "flex top". They rig well. Chances are the mast you have will be fine though. Just being a bit pedantic.

Fins
While I'm blabbing on and on (2nd Macciato) get a good fin. MFC Liquid Pro I reckon. Honestly fins make such a difference and they are often overlooked as you don't see them and they are small. But the fin has more contact with the water, which is 15x more ...something than the air. And you can get a brand spanking new one for around $300. Best bang-for-buck purchase I ever made. Can make board feel completely different.

Good luck

I know I'm pushing my own cart......
But the GT1 5.5 Freeride (in my comletely biased opinion)is an awesome sail.

Full x-ply, will rig on your 430 mast.
Made by EZZY (tough & proven design) is really well priced.

Cheers,
