It isn't fair. I got back from PNG last Friday, looking forward to a few weeks of wind. I mowed the grass on Saturday, as the kids were in danger of getting lost if they ventured off the path. On Sunday we had a 1st birthday party for Millie. Bewdy I thought, 2 days of family committments done, time for some wind action. Sunday night, a cut on my lower left leg (that I got in PNG but had healed nicely) decided to impersonate Mt Vesuvius. Big, red and painful. Off to emergency at 7.00 next morning. A few days in hospital watching heavy duty antibiotics drip through the tube in my arm, and watching the infection take over my whole lower leg, and watching doctors scratch their heads. Surgeon takes a look, and says "hey let's open that sucker up and see what's in there", so he does.

Finds a 10mm thorn and an 8mm seed pod, but no seed. The lab finally identifies the little bugs that are in there, and come up with a drug to battle them. But they have to leave the hole open and wet, to wick all the badness out, and then it has to heal. Hopefully I get out of hospital tomorrow, it was going to be the day after but I told the surgeon it's my birthday tomorrow, and he said I could go home tomorrow if the infections looking better in the morning. Will be lucky to get on the water in 6 weeks I reckon. Still, could be worse, and I'm sure a few of you lot have had more time off due to injury. I'll have the new P&P and The W'surf Movie to pass the time, plus the internet. And I guess I'll read some books, read the paper and do the crossword, watch Days of Our Lives, eat too much, muscles will fade away, slowly lose my mind............Arrrggghhhhhh!!!!!!!!
Easty, been there Jan this year (busted up, parked up, week in Hospital and two surgical procedures) 10 weeks off water right in prime time Jan Feb and half March![]()
Now you know why my forum score is so high.
what else too do, no kids to blather too (all grown up) and wife at work.
Bet your forum chatter will go up as well![]()
Hang in there, and try to keep the exercising up. You loose condition real fast.
How did you get the the damage, hopefully one of those "Rascals" didn't hit you with a blow pipe![]()

Nah, was doing some exploring down a remote part of West New Britain, and was looking for a possible track up and down the other side of this really old volcano. So just cut my legs up bashing through the bush, then mangrove swamps and warm coral sea water, so lotsa chance for strange bugs to get into wounds. It was pretty remote stuff, travelling down the coast in a dugout canoe, so left all the Rascals behind. They are getting bad in Port Moresby lately, saw a carjack happen right across the road from our place a few weeks ago.
Well I dont see the doc until November. Trying to limit myself to one DVD per day. Wot to do ? Find I'm reading the forum every 30 minutes, hey I dont want to miss anything. Wot else can we do Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh ? Who has some ideas.
I feel for you mate. Coming up to week number six of no activity whatsoever due to broken wrist.
It's painful to think of what you're missing but worth taking the time to heal properly (I hope).
Well wishes.
It's good to know I'm not alone, although I feel as sorry for you other guys as I do for myself. Plenty of internet and DVD time coming up, plus reckon I'll still go down to the local spots and watch the others have a blast when the winds on, sure to get a bit of satisfaction out of that. Just hoping the doc says I can get out of this boring hospital today - it's my b'day and I wanna go home!!. Oh, good hint if you're in hospital, you can get a disk to suit your mobile phone, and hook up to a telstra deal, and get broadband through your mobile to your laptop. Not sure how it works, my nice boss came in and hooked it up for me. Makes the day go heaps faster.

Tough break, Easty. Geez, you could have given the vegetarians (or the hung-over) a prior warning about the photo.
You'll be toey as hell till you're back on the water. Mrs Easty beware.
Yeah being ijured really really sucks. Had the same problem with my knee 5 times in a year and everytime it takes me out of action from everything for at least a month, sometimes more. Theres something prity wrong with it because the slightest bump it sweels up now. Getting a MRI scan next week sometime so hopefully something can be found out from that. But yeah i've missed much windsurfing from it so i hope they can work it out soon. I just hope they say to stop everything for a year or something.

The worst thing for me was not being able to drink alcohol for 2 weeks because of the anti-biotics.
I used water proof dressings and taped foam over my whole calf . Looked pretty silly but at least i got back on the water.
yer injuries suck the big one, broken bone's, stiches torn muscles, had them all but no infected thing on your leg, thats nasty.. time off the water is the most painful bit...

The VD Clinics of the 1950s and 1960s gave the somber and serious advice that alcohol should absolutely not be used while taking penicillin. But there were no significant chemical interactions between penicillin and alcohol. The real reason that this advice was given was for moral reasons, not pharmacological reasons. The medicos of the day were worried that alcohol would reduce the inhibitions of the sufferers, and that, while under the influence, they might get a little "frisky" and pass on their infection to another person, before the penicillin had a chance to cure the sexually transmitted diseases. That's how the mythconception that alcohol should never be taken with antibiotics arose.-Dr Karl, Alcohol & Antibiotics

Yes, being concerned about this myself, I googled "antibiotics and alcohol", and Dr. Karl was #1 listing. Read a few of them though, and it seems that some antibiotics do not mix well with alcohol, so check whatever you're on. Luckily my drug is ok, so cheers![]()
I missed 6 months due to shoulder surgery, and found myself buying windsurf gear as a substitute for actual sailing. Ended up selling most of what I bought soon after I got back on the water (why did I think I wanted to sail formula?)
Don't convalesce and shop! Best luck with the healing.
