Seems the older I get the more my knees suffer after each session

Has anyone had any luck with waterproof kneebraces to support them while you sail, and if so, whereabouts did you get them from?

have you heard the story about the brickies laborer wheeling his wheel barrow full of mud over a plank and gets a puncher , so he repairs the tyre and gets another load of mud and another puncher so pulls the tyre off and fixes it, after the third time a builder on the site comes over with his hammer and pulls the nail out and says, there you go that should fix it
moral of the story find some flatter water to sail in , I use to like to sail bay swells but now I tend to get hamstring cramps water starting so I only sail flat water, it fixed the problem

Or chase down softer riding boards. There's more to soft riding than just deep V or concaves. Flex, centre of percussion, mass distribution, vibrational nodes and antinodes are all inter-related. A different fin, sail and board width combination might let you sink the leeward rail and get a softer riding windward rail.

We need to get some violin makers on the job.

Unfortunately, for me, its more than just softer riding boards, or flatter water (thanks Keef thats real helpful ).
My knees give my grief even if I walk too far or try jogging etc.

I know there is an underlying problem, I'm just trying to reduce the effects.
Wearing a standard elastic kneebrace afterwards helps, but if I can reduce it in the first place that has to be better.

Must admit I did take fish oil / glucosamine but because I am a lazy bastard I fell out of the habit. Will start them back up though now youve reminded me.

Maybe I just realised what the problem is ...... I'm a lazy bastard

I got really worrried about my hips, but since I stopped using my 115L Carbon/Kevlar board the situation is improving.
The wood based construction seems to work well. It's still reasonably light, but has some flex so it feels softer.

I wonder how well the thick pads work (I.E. Tabou S3) on Carbon boards ?

Glucosamine definitelly works if used regularly.
Didn't know about fish oil, but why not? I'll get myself onto them too. (Thanks Mark).

In a similar situation, crap genetics, crap knees, ankles, hips. Can't run or do impact exercise because if I do I limp around for a few days after, walking down stairs is the worst.

The fish oil and glucosamine seem to help.
Big help is squats and deadlifts, building up the muscle in my legs helps with reducing the problems after sailing. Squatting and deadlifting enough weight so I can do 6-15 reps 3 sets.
working at a desk job doesn't help, sitting for 8 hours a day impacts the legs.

Softer gear required. This will sound like an ad, but I have a fair amount of damage in my joints (48 yo) with pretty chronic shoulders and sensitive knees. Almost all of my gear is soft riding. My exocet freeride and fsw boards are particularly comfortable, with their double density pads and soft riding form. I sail mostly in rough open bay conditions and don't have a problem. I like soft, stable cushion-y sails too and so have an all-Ezzy setup of no-cam cheetahs and wave sails on Ezzy masts. Using curved freeride and fsw style fins softens things up too, making boards less direct feeling.

in using this stuff i hope to prolong my windsurfing years. It's either that or take up model railways.

I was having trouble with the inside muscles of my knee after sailing so I bought a kneebrace from Angstey surgical in Newcastle for $99. I have hardly used it as I am inbetween sizes so the M is too big and I got the small but it is almost impossible to get on.I'm also doing exercises to strengthen the area. Anyway I think with the right size one it would help support your knee. Mine is neoprene ,has a hole for the kneecap and a round ridgelike strengthener around the hole. I was told by my chiro to ensure the kneecap could move..?

This might sound like it, but it's not an ad for tabou. I couldn't take the punishment that my old manta used to dish out. 4mm thick footpads would make my knees and ankles sore after a session, but since they put thicker ones, 8mm, I no longer suffer from the sore knee syndrome. (just the usual age type stuff). The thinner the footpads, the harsher the ride.

Have you tried strengthening the muscles around your knees? Try squats with a fitball sandwiched between your back and a wall, stand with your knees slightly bent resting against the fitball, then roll the ball down the wall with your back until your knees are at 90deg, then push up again. 3 sets of 20 a few times a week really helped tighten up my knee joints (and worked for my brother who had the same problem as well).

I suffered frozen shoulder syndrome, tried all sorts, even a shot of lube that worked for a while. In the end to my surprise I switch to 1000m a day capsule of Krill oil. For some reason it worked after about three weeks. No more sleepless nights with should pain and now able to reach above should without discomfort.

I'm using Vitamore Krill Oil (30 day course, available from Coles for $10-$15). Aussie made, and reasonably priced. I got it for my stuffed knees, but these pills have stopped general aching in my joints, and given me extra flexibility. Normally I would have to do 10 minutes of stretching each morning and would get out of bed like at 80 YO after a previous days sail. Now, I jump out of bed with no stretching needed.

grumplestiltskin: I'll be seeing a knee surgeon in winter. An old motorcycle accident I had in my early 20's has come back to bite me... so it's about time I do something about it. Windsurfing brought back this injury. So know how you feel. I am going to go straight for surgery. I figured the sooner the better.

About twenty thousand dollars a year?

They make a combination tablet with Glucosamine Sulphate and Chondroitin Sulphate and I take one of those each day for my joints.

Like Mark Australia, I reckon I can feel the difference when I stop taking them.

There are 'softer' boards - I thought the RRD FSW's I have tried are very comfortable to sail.
A friend of mine likes to sail fast, but his Isonic in big chop does his knees in.

Wing wetsuits in Sydney do a good knee brace for wake boarders which is nice thick neoprene with stiffeners down each side which helps keep everything stable. I have been using one for a year and a bit after a torn miniscus and it is great for support.

My surgeon told me to never do squats or lunges as they certainly make your muscles stronger but they also wear the cartilage out. He explained it to me as if you want to play football for ten years then go ahead but if you want to stay active into older age then definitely don't it.

I would have thought they would more have been for busted ACL or similar. I know a couple of guys who sail with them, and I'm pretty sure that's what they use them for.

I used to have knee cap trouble running long distances, and strapping used to fix the problem by holding my knee caps in alignment. You might like to visit a physio, and ask them if there is any way of strapping that could help your problem. Not sure the chance of success, but relatively cheap and simple to try.

Could also try and place more weight on harness I guess, and let your board ride up and over the chop instead of having extended stiff legs.
