WOW, they really are a massively BIG chunk of a board when you see them standing up near someone.
Needing a lie down...
Well it was a HUGE day of action at the Surflogic Australia Slalom states.
The forecast was menacing and it delivered but 30 odd hit the water to give it a crack round the gybe marks.
13 degrees air temp - 20-25 knots onshore with 30+ recorded on the Parkdale Yacht Club rescue boat in Heat 2 - forever known as the "Hammer Heat".
BLOWN UP...
What a day on the water for the 2021 Surflogic Australia Victorian Slalom Champs.
No-one who competed will forget the challenge that was presented on this cold and windy May day on Port Phillip.
The breeze was ON all day meaning a good size shore break in the 20-25 knot Westerly.
The air and water temp were 14 C or so and with windchill it was very brisk!
Getting off the beach was a handful and once past the 2nd sand bar there was no let up from rolling waves and confused chop.
The fleet did a great job to get through 3 heats of each division.
Race 2 (the 'Hammer' heat) was TOUGH - with over 30 knots constant recorded on the course.
Staying on was a real battle with every sailor having to muster everything to get around.
There was plenty of thrills and spills throughout.
Lots of shell shocked but happy crew at the end to enjoy the sausage sizzle in the comfort of the shiny new Parkdale Yacht Club.
Congratulations to all
Looks great, Id love to try some racing, but who is that lunatic in the spring suit? Its 4/3 steamer and booties weather in Melbourne now.
