I have a copy of Mark Warrens Atlas of Australian surfing and its perfect for planing a surfing road trip.
I was thinking how awesome it would be to have one for windsurfing with all the popular spots in Australia, including events, clubs, weather and times of year etc.
Would be nice but I doubt there's enough audience to publish one properly. However an online version where people can enter the spots they've sailed with google map and comments for best wind/tides/rigging ground/etc would be good.
Windwanderes has a good start on this for SE Q on their website, I've used this on trips south looking for where to go in the current winds.
I think enough info is available online and it takes 2mins to find out where to sail if visiting WA or Hawaii or the Canaries for example.
Thus an atlas of main spots would not sell probably.
An atlas of smaller and secret spots would result in the author/s being lynched.
Sailpilot: noooooooo waaaayyyyyyy
There is a really good book updtaed annually called "Where to Ski and Snowboard". The authors just spend their winters travelling around to different ski resorts and the result is an awesome book that sells heaps of copies. What a job!
I have often thought it would be great to do a similar thing with windsurfing (ahem, including our much-maligned fellow wind-sport).
The thing is that skiing / snowboarding is probably something like 1000 times bigger than windsurfing / kiting? Maybe 2000 times?
Anyway, as others have said, there are not enough of us to make such a guide viable as any more than a hobby, so it is best done as a web thing.
A "wikepedia' type database would be enough, where people could add spots and info etc..
Maybe even hosted by a site not to dissimilar to Seabreeze ![]()
Yes its a great book, I did own a copy but somewhere lost it. Thinking about getting another copy as the coast hasn't really changed that much in 25 years.
as drift says above this is pretty much what my site ( thewindmap.com )tries to do. If you think there's anything specific ways it could be better for what you have in mind let me know.
