No DVD or VHS? Home internet is too slow for anything but low resolution YT. Assuming all the seasonal residents and tourists are not eating up bandwidth. Still own R.I.P. VHS. JMHO, classic and one of the best windsurfing videos.

Being three years older than RN, so much I could relate too (Life, injuries, slowing down). Different film than I thought as well, but really enjoyed the angle. It's Life. It was very cool that he was humble enough to throw in his first foil experience. Most high end pro's wouldn't have done that. Was cracking up when Kai told him to move the foil all the way forward on that board".

Despite my huge respect for the man I was a bit disappointed as well. The concept was pretty flimsy and it doesn't really go anywhere. It also looked a bit under-resourced (surely they could have found some better waves?)I would have liked to see a few more interviews with his peers and people who aren't on his payroll. It felt a bit like too much of a "puff piece" at times. Like a lot of successful athletes it takes a certain amount of bloody single mindedness and dedication to get there (and to stay there) and that doesn't necessarily translate into making him an interesting subject for a feature film.

I had the same issue with our new Samsung Smart TV but it worked with the 16 year old plasma tv with Telstra TBox.

I gave up on the TV and went for the computer. Loved the movie and I guess I'm at the same stage asking similar questions. Ie I'm still dealing with a long term injury that is and if I can still do my sport at the level I want to as I get older.
As to the extreme stuff, I just go onto YouTube and watch Kai

Do you have a direct link? I have search on Redbull.tv but there doesn't seem be anything listed under riders of the liquid plains.

That was a very very strange movie. I couldn't for the life of me figure out the point of it, it just seemed a bit of a mash up of unconnected bits of Robby's life and I came away with the impression of a guy who seems to lack a bit of joy for someone who has been so successful. I'd have preferred a bit more shredding and a little less about his divorces.

No big deal (maybe I have too much time on my hands during lockdown), but is anyone else wondering/sceptical about the (minor spoiler alert) Kai/Robby split then reunion? After many happy years Kai leaves Team Naish for no apparent reason, says he'll never be friends again with Robby (he may have said "good friends" or similar but I can't be bothered going back to check), again for no reason, then next thing we know, they're reunited as friends for the happy ending. All this happening over an extended period but they managed to get it all on film.

I'm not wondering. People disagree, move on and are still friends.

I meant wondering if there was some artistic license, as is "let's make up/exaggerate some personal tension/relationship stuff for the sake of the movie."

I think it was pretty real. I mean the dude didn't get an invite back. If it was just "reality TV" they could have had him along for the next leg and played up some artificial tension on the water, etc. As an armchair therapist, it may have been that Naish was going through a period of changes especially in the personal relationships dept and Kai leaving after all those years, he may have not taken it well. He may have looked at it less as a child moving on to bigger and better things and more like a lieutenant moving to the other side. Lenny at the time was like 30? Certainly time for him to move on and create his own brand if those were his ambitions as he's certainly earned the right with his accomplishments.

I think it probably started as a documentary about some legendary watermen on a great global quest but, as the cameras rolled, it morphed into something else with the weather disappointments, injuries and relationship changes. Sometimes in that business you have to capture what is - which may not be what you wanted. Otherwise, you are indeed creating the equivalent of "reality TV".

Of course, everyone has their own truth and despite the director's best efforts, it's common that someone will feel like there was some artistic license taken. It did seem to fizzle out at the end and maybe that's more about Naish having gotten older, more vulnerable and learning a bit to accept that he was no longer a champion but an older guy out to get the most he could from the conditions. It also faced the reality that his original choice to ride the longest wave, a paddleboard, by the time the film was finished, was no longer the best choice for that goal as Kai could surf circles around him on his foil, imho.

I think for a lot of his older fans, we could identify with what he was going through on some level - aging f***s with your mind as it doesn't age the way your body does and for some of us, it's difficult to accept that the body is no longer up to the task.

No doubt the ending had a transactional feel to it. ("We need an ending? Let's get Kai back in, he'll be up for it. His Insta will go nuts")
I'm surprised no one has mentioned Robby's choice of transport on Maui? WTF!! The anti-Prius.

I think the film largely follows the formula of "Some Kind of Monster". Personally I felt it was lacking emotional insight and connection. There really didn't seem to be a connection between the film maker and the subject or at least that's how it came across. While that might have worked for a documentary about a Rock band with big egos it would be tricky for subjects that are a bit more humble.

I think extreme sports and the people in it are a tricky subject to get right, especially when you don't have any connection to it. The best documentaries in that field seem to be made by people that have an existing connection and interest but are able to distill the essence of it so it's interesting for people outside of it.

I noted the size of his twin exhaust pipes, not a good look! I vaguelly remember many years ago Robby made some comment about motor racing? that he liked grease? and noisy? engines and he commented that would surprise people in contrast to his (clean/green) wind and wave powered sports.
In the current film he mentioned the high view his truck gave of the road. I was curious to see how the tray handled his gear, because I don't think over-sized utes benefit from a proportional increase in carrying capacity. Also how badly would the height of the tray affect ease of getting gear in and out. But I don't think they showed that.

By the way, if anyone wants to see where his house is, it's easy to find on Google Earth, just go a bit further east past Jaws. And you can see it for sale on a real estate site. "Run around naked and shoot my guns ... "

I really felt sorry for him (at least for him as he came across in the movie). I mean, aside from the fact that he's lived the life and done way more awesome stuff and made more money than I ever will (and that's not fair), he really is all alone in this world. Alone at the top, perhaps, but he can see his time is growing short and he's becoming more fragile.

And his empire, his position, his company/brand/business all revolves around Robby Naish the star, a star who is no longer quite at the top of his game, and who will gradually become less relevant to newer generations. Kai Lenny is only what, 20 or so? He's got 20-30 amazing years ahead of him at least. At what point would he have started carrying Robby's brand for him?

Was that always in the back of Robby's mind as he was mentoring this young kid, that Kai could carry the torch for him? How did they part ways so easily? Was it all about the cash? Its kind of cool that everything didn't turn out perfect, tied up in a neat little bundle like the ending of a Hollywood movie.

I could keep rambling. I just hope Robby can mellow out, stop pushing himself so hard, and just enjoy life.

Personally a bit depressing, having religiously read the windsurfing mags in the 80s, well I guess there was no internet....

All the battles for the titles against poor Pete, I always had massive respect for Robby, adding the fact he has managed to build a great company on top of his career.
I have sort of lost touch over the years and have joined the hated kiters, (its just easier to look cool)

The disappointment was there, sitting in the outdoor Luna Leederville cinema a few months back.
I wasnt ready to open up about my experience at the time, but with all the other disappointed disciples of the scull and bones...

Just pretty lame quest to ride a decent wave, not realy trying very hard to get to a reasonable outcome.
Like, oooh, my marriages failed, I look like my grandma now, this is all I got...
