Hi,
I'm going to Aruba in 2 weeks - has anyone been and has some advice on accommodation, spot and which rental place is the best?
Cheers!
I haven't been personally but a friend was there. Head to the North West coast near Malmok.
North of the big hotel area. Near a place called the fisherman's hut.
You'll find steady offshore 20 knots and must be rentals around easy to find.
Have fun!
Spent a week there 14 years ago with my family (kids were toddlers then) when we were living in South America. Stayed at the Marriott next to Vela Windsurf centre. Super handy for the windsurf rental.
It's a lovely place for a holiday - great with the family - we have very happy memories of our holiday there.
Depending on ability it can be a bit of a compromise for windsurfing. Wind is gusty and you have to head quite a way offshore to get cleaner / stronger wind. Once you are out at sea, it's nice sailing and you won't want to be coming back to the beach often as it's a chore to get back. But the resort is well set up for that with a floating pontoon offshore complete with drinking water supplies. There is a support boat that regularly drags boards back in if needs be.
The upside of the offshore wind is that while you are out windsurfing the family can be enjoying the beach without getting sand blasted.
That's my experience from 14 years ago. There maybe better places to head to now - I don't know.
The Pina Coladas are awesome.
Have fun!
It's windeeeeee! I first properly learnt to windsurf there as a kid many moons ago - was epic with perfect tradewinds blowing everyday with dead flat water and a shallow sandbank area that went out a long way so you could walk back to the beach. I helped out as a board grom for Vela and was on the plane, in the harness and using footstraps in 2 weeks....shame I didn't keep that level increase going much further lol :P We were there for 6 months and only had 2 days of sub 15kts (hence the trees grow sideways!) - no idea if it's enjoyable for non-windsurfers haha!
