114 nm as the albatross flies. Starting from a nice beach north of Stanley to allow a broad reach all the way. Nearly hit an the oil rig half way across.
Average 16 knots. might just celebrate now with a beer..

and oldie bass strait was crossed by two sailboards in the mid 80s cant remember there names but the mother ship was the dell richie ,the crossing will be very interesting to watch to see how modern rigs handle the crossing , in 15-20 knot of wind with 3-5 knot of current bass strait gets very rough quick not the sort of place to be a wide board , by the way im not trying argue with anyone cheers

I,ve been looking at this run for a while and as oldie has suggested 7 hrs is about right. Most of my long distance runs have averaged out at 21kts.Sailing on an Easterly, which means the current and wind are going in the same direction would give you flatish seas.The biggest problem that I can see is sailing on the one tack for so long is very hard on your body and most boats will struggle to keep up with you through rough seas.A doctor from Sydney (Simon Le Sur) I think also sailed across the ditch.Good luck to her, it would be a fun trip.
Yeah i heard that Nick Moloney was pretty rooted after he completed his trip across bass Strait.

More than happy to fix Allison up with speed gear any time she wants to have a shot at the pit . Not her sponsors brand though .
Iv'e raced against her on Formula quite a few times and she flies . She could easily set the women's record in the right conditions .
As for Bass Straight , fantastic to see her give it a shot , and what a great thing to get windsurfing on the telly and in newspapers for once .
Kato, I think the guy you are thinking of is Gavin La Soeur (spelling probably incorrect). AFAIK he didn't cross Bass Strait but he did sail his Windsurfer from Melbourne to Sydney along the coast. Possibly a more Grueling feat. certainly a longer expedition.
Back in the late 70's or early '80's Bass Strait was crossed on Windsurfers by two Melbourne Guys (I think one was Les Tokli - again spelling incorrect?) with a Yacht as backup. It was a multi day journey as I remember it. Kind of a gentleman's crossing. That way appeals to me.... Kato, When are we going mate? What about on the tandem?
