Hey all!
Headed to Cocos Islands shortly for a sail and have had a little trouble with domestic flight baggage. Virgin leg cool, but Qantas/Jetstar say windsurfers too large to class as oversize baggage and will have to freight. Anyone done this before and was it quick enough/ok? Or anyone have any tricks/tips/loopholes/ideas on how to cart my gear?
Cheers!
Paul
G'day, the maximum baggage allowance for quantass is 2.77 m and 23 kgs. I think their thinking oldschool windsurfers with one piece masts when they're talking about freighting gear.
The chick on the phone told me the same thing but I've never had a problem. I buy an extra bag which gives you 53 kg including hand luggage, heaps!
Happy flying.

Virgin and Qantas flights can carry your gear no worries. BUT, if you're on a Jetstar flight then forget about it. Jetstar luggage gets packed into containers that are then loaded into the plane. Windsurfing gear wont easily fit in the containers.

Thanks for the heads up Buzzy!

And always
- pay in advance if possible
- bring the airline's rules for flying with gear with you in print
- check in your gear, and other luggage, as early as possible
and when you arrive, take out the board and inspect it carefully before leaving the airport. This alone cost me about 500 EUR last year, since the airline did a major damage to the rail on my board, but it was on the side that is just did not look at since we were late and a bit stressed with the fam.

+1 I've had a board squashed flat ![]()
