tldr;
75-77 kg. Can waterstart, but not much else. Use the harness a bit, but still get catapulted a lot. Best board I've used was a Fanatic Gecko 135 - very wide, thin, like a Fanatic Shark that's been steamrolled. But I only used that board once and I was told that it wasn't quite so gusty on that particular day, hence my planing success on the day. One foot in the straps at most. Next goal: to consistently plane with both feet in the straps and to get really low (use the harness more and my poor forearms less).

So what are my choices for sailing in the Bay in Melbourne?

2014 Tabou Rocket 125 L

<div>2014 JP X-Cite Ride Plus 125 L

<div>2014 JP Magic Rde 118 L

<div>The last one is the most Gecko-like. I was told the X-Cite Ride Plus is less beginner-friendly in the latest shape.

<div>Boom, mast - all alum OK?r

<div>Sail sizes?

Thanks in Advance
P.S.
I'm thinking of going somewhere really windy again for 2 weeks over X-mas. Could I be getting gear I'll be bored with soon?

Cranky

The biggest mistake people make is going too small too soon. Buy a 130l to 150l board second hand until you can water start, use the foot straps and occasionally jibe. Then buy a 120l board as your first short board. You will probably keep your big board for light days.

As for the rig.
Allum boom is fine. Chinook is good.
The mast needs to have some carbon in it and must match the sail.

Buy a 5.5 to 6m sail as a starting point

We are talking hundreds of dollars not thousands.

You will have fun with this

I can water start. When I was in Vassiliki, I was told to get a 120 L when I get back home, or "I'd be bored soon". I was told that the magic ride 118 is like a 135 traditional shape board because of its width.

Anyway, I feel like going new because I don't want to mix and match gear (don't want to think about it too much). Also, intermediate gear seems thin on the ground second hand (I see lots of wave boards).

Hi cranky

I tried the starboard 121 futura and it was awesome.

I haven't tried the JP magic ride so I can't comment. However I ride a JP freestyle wave 101 and love it.

However i still think it is handy to have a 130+ board for light days. When you master this you will buy a second board around 100 liters. You won't take out a 120l board in 25 knots so it's a bit of a stepping stone board.

My two boards are a 170l starboard go for light wind days and 101 jp for strong days. I am considering selling my 170l for a 150l SUP. I'll use this on light days to practice tacks

Where do you sail? I sail mainly at middle park.

Long term, that's my target board.

Right now... nowhere. Waiting for the water to warm up a little. The plan is to stick to the East side of the Bay.
