I tried this new extension from Triple D innovations, that allows you to change downhaul while sailing at full speed. This adds a lot of range to your sail. Warning video is super long and nerd level is high. Hope you enjoy

Yea but they can't do it without taking their hands off the boom and the adjustables on those classes are pretty much universally ****.

Nope, you adjust it on the fly. But I can see why this could be a better solution. I am always happy when I see people are still investing in windsurfing/windfoiling developments.

I'm getting more and more sold on this as a cool thing after initially thinking it was too expensive with other alternatives. A bit wary of electronics though after having sealed up cameras fail more than once.
My Adjustable outhaul does wonders for the race foil sails, and using this would probably really make me see the light.

Yeah , but it would be really good. I would be more happy adjusting downhaul on the fly that outhaul. Both would be ace , with push buttons on the boom. They can send man to the moon with pinball machine mechanics, surely we can do this. I'd pay good money for it.

Agree its a lot to break, very niche but I reckon the speed guys would like this. would probably be against rules in Slalom, Iq and Raceboards.

My bad. I have only seen the systems on the iq where it is hidden in the luff pocket. Probably too much drag to have it on the outside in foiling, so there you have to stop to get to it
Great idea. I just set it to the suggested downhaul or max as I don't have the strength to adjust it out there or it's too much hassle. I'm not much good in light winds so this would really help.
I really like the idea of adjusting for gusty conditions as we rarely get consistent wind.
I wonder how it threads on a Severne sail ? The pulleys are at a different angle to most other brands,
If there is a real performance gain, then pro will use it at DefiWind, PWA and maybe Luderitz.
Will be interesting to see if that happens.
Also could you break your mast if the "extend" button get stuck on ? ![]()
Luckily in windsurfing (or wind foiling) there are at least half a dozen other things one can improve on at any given level that will make a bigger difference in performance than this. Not that this should stop anyone from innovating, or from enjoying the fruits of innovation -- just adding some (my) perspective.
When adding downhaul, wouldn't one expect to also add outhaul? So the racers will have that adjustable as well.
Could a mechanical fin would also help? At times you might want more fin, or more sweep depending on the maneuver or speed. For example, getting upwind to the break with a big vertical fin and then wave sailing with a smaller swept fin. Or, just keeping control at high speeds, planing earlier in light wind, shedding sea grass and so on.
Have been using the Power XT 2.0 ratchet extension for some years in cross onshore and cross offshore. To get ouit past the break, in onshore, bag the sail for more power. Once out, stop and add both downhaul and outhaul to reduce excess power. Then work upwind where the coast curves more towards the wind. Later in the evening when wind often dies, do the reverse.
The XT works simplest with North/Duotone sail pulleys, but have learned to use it with other sails' pulleys. Also, one should use tendon UJ's rather than the hourglass(Chinook) or hinged designs. One dealer person told me they do not sell the XT because "it would most certainly lead to huge warranty costs". My experience has been good even rigging on sand in howling wind and roughest onshore surf. XT version 1.0 also works, though the pawl release can hesitate at times. I have five version 2.0 extensions and one version 1.0, three in each of two different hemispheres, for three complete rigs, 4.2, 4.7 and 5.2.
Billiekrub I think Ken Winner experimented with adjusting fin depth in the early days of Formula boards. I'm sure if you got an America's cup syndicate they would be able to make it happen!
I finally had time to watch the video and if I was still into slalom I would be keen to use one. It looks like a great adjustment system!
At some spots I would stop and fine tune my sail as conditions changed.
When I started wave sailing in cross shore and side off I initially struggled with not adjusting my sail but it was a pain to get in and out of the break and wind line further out - I just persevered with the sail I rigged! In the gusts my back hand just moved further back ![]()
