Wind: You need about 20knots or more, 16/17/18 knots if you know what doing and on right gear
Water: As flat as you can get and at least 300 metres, more is preferable.
Gear: roughly 6mt sail, flattish rocker board, such as a slalom board, and reasonable fin.
Technique: Sail Broad, about 120 to 140 degrees off the wind, light feet, flexible knees, and go for it attitude.
40 knots 10 sec ave on a Starboard kids pro S with KA 5.0 Koncept and a TM 45 fin.All of the shelf stuff
The key to fast speeds is the flat water. The hairyist run I,ve ever done was a 33peak in chop. Gave up triing to go fast that day before I broke something.
Very possible, all my kit is production and I've done 35 knots.
As said above, flat water and rigging big is your friend.
The first time I took a GPS out I was on a 105 litre freeride board, with a 7m sail. I kept on doing 26's until I changed my fin from a 30cm to a 37cm -- then I started doing 28's. A couple of runs later I'd cracked the 30
This surprised me, because I'd thought that the smaller fin would be faster than the bigger fin.
So the key for me was experimenting with my setup, and keeping an open mind about what changes to make. With a GPS it's a lot easier to figure out what makes you go faster. Don't be afraid to change mast foot position, boom height, outhaul, downhaul, fin size, strap position etc, but be sure to do three runs on any setup before you make a decision as to whether or not it's faster than any other setup. And only change one thing at a time!
Probably the first things to experiment with would be outhaul and fin size. Muck around with these for a couple of hours and pick the setup that gives you the best speed, then start experimenting with other stuff.
Even more impressive are the guys breaking into the 33 -36 kt range on wave gear, so off the shelf gear is more than capable of cracking 30, I on the other hand have 2 more knots to go untill the magical 30 for me, I have even started jogging to shead a 5 kilos, I have lost about 3 at the minute, also if you have a degree of stamina you can stay out a bit longer so when that last nice puff comes along you are already on the water and not derigging coz, as mineral1 says "Ya tin fruited" Buggered, stuffed, tired, kaput, knackered and wanna go home for sleeps.
My fist time on the JP 93ltr FSW with a very average 33 inch weedy and an old 6.0 Ezzy I went from stuck at 25kts max to 28.15 kts and it felt great, unfortunately I did not have as much TOW due to starting a new family so it was hard to keep up the pace but this season I hope to crack the big 30 ![]()
So yes, stock gear goes good mate ![]()
