I just purchased a 2016 Ezzy Legacy 5.2 sail to replace my 2001 North Dr X 5.3 sail. I am super stoked to try it out. I have read wonderful reviews on the legacy, but have to wait 3 months until the snow melts here for the season to start. Do you guys think I can get out any earlier with this new Ezzy verses my my old 5.3? I have read and heard these newer sails have much more wind range. On my old 5.3 Dr X, I could get planning with it in about 20 MPH windspeed on my Naish Starship 115L board and me weighing in at 180 pounds. Even though this Legacy is one size smaller, would I be able to get out planning in less wind than the 5.3 Dr X? Or would I need about 20 MPH of wind to get me planning on the 5.2 Legacy as well? I will be using the 5.2 Legacy on the 115L Starship.
5.3 versus 5.2 is hardly any difference. It's likely the Legacy will have more bottom end AND more top end than your old sail. 20mph = about 17 knots so sounds very doable (you should get used to thinking and talking in knots so Australians - and the rest of the maritime world - can understand what you mean). I rig my Ezzys with max downhaul at all times, and you should do this too. Use the outhaul to adjust the power. They are a wonderful sail, light in your hands, very stable, and immensely strong. Welcome to the family.
Shifu,
When you say, "more bottom end and more top end in the sail", is that the same as more wind range in the sail?
Yes. I think it likely it will get you planing sooner, but also remain composed in higher winds than your old sail. You are leaping across 15 years of sail development. I think you will be very pleased with it. You haven't mentioned what mast you are using but if your old sail was a north then presumably it's compatible?
Shifu,
Here comes the good part. I will be using my 2016 Ezzy Hookipa 400 mast. Can't wait to see how the Legacy sails in that mast. My old 5.3 wouldn't fit in my 400 mast, it took a 430 mast. The luff in my old 5.3 was 440-444. Thats huge compared to the 5.2 Legacy which luff is 421-423.
After sailing my 6.0 2015 cheetah for 2 weeks in WA .THE performance and wind range was huge compared to my mates who used 5.2 and 5.8 .sails ...same weight ...as me .
i just didn't change until it was 26 -28 knots .then I went to my 2008 north 5.0 with a luff of 434. The shorter luff on modern sails are far easier to sail .
i also rig with mid to full down haul every time and just play with the out haul .I was surprised how well it worked on a Neilpryde x6 mast . Looking to replace the north 5.0 next year ....know of any good ones ?
Good to hear that Tardy, I will let you know in a couple months how this Legacy sails. From the sound of things already, I think I'm gonna like it. I am real curious to see the wind range on this Legacy. I'm sure all the other Ezzyness features in the sail will pop out at me too while sailing.
I thought, given the other thread, that an Ezzy Taka may be the best B&J freeride sail
You will love this compared to a 2001 model for sure...
Mark,
The funny thing was, I was on the phone ready to buy the 2016 Talka, but my shop sold out in the 5.3 size for the special of $498. The Talka was half off at the time. So my next choice was the 2016 Legacy in the 5.2 size which they still had a few left. I was able to get the Legacy for the same price as the Taka for $498 including shipping. The Legacy wasn't on sale as much as the Taka was. I now think the Legacy was the better choice since I will be using it for choppy lake blasting, and bump n jump.
I think a way better choice
Also not only better than a 2001 sail, the Dr-X didn't seem to last long, only one or two years so I wonder if it was not the best.
The ads with the nurses were good though

Tiger. Sails the same as the Cheetah.
The strangest thing is for the Dr X sail being as old as it is, it's in really good shape. I'm not even the original owner of The sail. I have had it for 6 years and have used it a fair amount. I don't know how many uses it had prIor to me. I would say it's in B condition now. It seems that North put a thick sheet of mylar on for its time made. The sail cloth is even sowen into the x-ply. It still seems pretty bomb proof. Maybe it has had A professional beefed up job done to it. It will be a good tough sail for my windski. Should hold up great in the snow.

Thanks shifu.
plenty sizes to choose from too.
Magic,
you have on this thread a lot of theory, about your sail.
is it an improvement over your 2001.. it replaced duh ?
could you have purchased a Taka.. being taken the piss of , as the best bump and jump sail ..Duh
i have not sailed the Legacy, when I first saw the sail rigged in Fox Watersports in Buxton, NC, I formed a opinion based on what I saw.
i stayed with Cheetah in 6.5 and 7.5 , Panthers in 6.0 or Panther Ltd below. When the Elite came out I went too, them in 5.7 and 4.0. When the Taka I came out I got it in 4.5, I still have it, much preferred over the Elites. I have sailed Ezzy for some years, moderated now as I have custom sails that to me are a combo of everything I want . FWIW , I also have/had HSM, the QU4D , offers as much or more of my needs than the Elite.
none of this has much ado about your legacy. But notice I have offered no opinion on it.
i think you are looking at opinions to support your purchase..it's called confirmation bias.

You're a smart man Forceten. I guess until sailing season starts over here, I was seeing if I could pick anyone's brain a little more about the more precise planning range of the Legacy and I think I feel pretty confident about my purchase. I new that others would throw other fun humor in with this post and who knows, when someone else wants info on the Legacy, they are filled in. I can tell you have a lot of windsurfing knowledge on gear, and I do enjoy reading about what you say.
