Gday People

My name is Marcus, I live on the Sunshine Coast and I used to windsurf alot 15-20 years ago, mostly at Golden Beach and on the bar at Bullcock beach. I loved it so much I bought an old video camera (it was a two peace unit and it was very heavy) and put a few amateur local windsurfing vids together. The other day while I was cleaning out the shed I came across an old VHS tape, wouldn't you know it their was one of my old windsurfing vids. Now it was in pritty bad shape and the colour was faded with lots of bad sound but it was salvageable. So I converted it to digital and uploaded it to youtube.

I remember some of the local people in the vid but I am wondering if any one else can remember them, you may even see yourself. Sadly I do know of one person that has past away a few years ago, RIP Willy, always remembered and sadly missed.

Anyway if your an old school windsurfer from Caloundra then I'm sure you'll enjoy this trip back in time, cheers Marcus.
(ps. thats me doing duck jybes with the JV sail in the middle of the vid and at the end, at 46yo now, I wish I was still that slim, lol.)

cheers for sharing marcus.

i was one of the regulars back then (not in the vid). that vid shows just how good the pond used to be. especially the bar.

i remember willy also and was sad when i heard the news. i remember everyone judged how fast they were on the speed run by trying to drag off willy. he was so so quick.

there are a couple of guys organising a windsurfing event as a memorial to willy. i have been assisting a little with it and willy's son was asked permission prior to organising the event. it's been slow going getting it off the ground but hopefully something will be able to be run soon.

Marcus,
Vid was an absolute blast from the past. Great stuff. Amazing to see just how little mast curve those sails had. Loved the loop attempts and body drag (20knots to zero in 2metres)

PS - give up that teabagging - us poleys are alot nicer than those kids over in the Kiting Forum

That was GREAT! love it.

I saw an interesting helitack variation in there. I've never seen that before. I'll have to give it a go :)

That's too bad about Willy. He's been a fixture at GB all these years.

Memories...Brilliant! Now I know whats wrong with my sailing stance..Im stuck in the 90's! The gybes look so easy..I remember when mine felt like that.. Boy the nose on some of those boards look lethal!
That was in the days when there was wind...

Your welcome
Yeah thats what I noticed that their was much more water and less trees than their is now, you could even see the surf from GB then.

About Willy...can you please pm me when a date is set for the windsurfing event memorial if it goes ahead.

Do you still sail at GB on a regular basis? might see you their.

cheers Marcus

Your not kidding, I coped a flogging in my first two post in the kitesection, I singled out the person with the worst responce and let him have it, I was so angry, lol.
I still love sailboarding, its just that I am trying something different for now.
Cheers Marcus

Grouse. Absolute grouse.
One can see smiles. I would swear we don't see any of that much anymore?? I see more the "what sail size will I rig" sort of worried faces.

Tell the cameraperson he/she did a hell of job (if you're on tape, I suspect it wasn't always ya??).

Stable, always at the right place, well centered. I wish I had someone that steady at times...
Great clip.

I had the pleasure of sailing there on my trip up north in October last year. There was still a fun crew sailing there.

p.s -Love the helmet at 7.29, He could either be a stormtrooper, or open the batting for Australia

Hey Marcus I've been stuck in a time capsule...this all looks modern to me. Fantastic, it brings back great memories, no I'm not one of them in your vid but my gear that I've stowed away looks from the same era. So much pink and fluro green! Thanks for the effort in restoring it to digital. Great job.

It's a motivator for me. Thank you.

Yeah . Wouldnt it be lovely to have someone to take some footage for future memories..wouldnt matter how crappy you sail.I was laid up as an invalid for 4 or 5 years & never thought Id sail , XCD ski etc again. It looks like I might never get good enough to ski again & I really regret not having any up to date photos or footage of what i use to do. Im really conscious now of the fact that something could prevent me from sailing in the future so I want records now.

haaa haaaaaa........ loved all the flouro.

Reminds me of my old light blue and flouro orange rip curl wetty.....
................ahhhh..... which i still....... use

Those old longer boards look nice and stable at speed, makes my modern shorty look like a real handfull. Though im sure theres an as yet undiscovered advantage to my using a short board.

Well i feel a little better knowing im not the only one, at least in flouro you tend to look a bitt less like a seal (shark food), coz all the sightings of noah's in the bay is starting to FREAK ME OUT

And i dont mind too much looking like a fashion disaster, apart from which i'm too much of a tight-arse to buy a new one. All i need is some flouro sails to match, all these clear panels are just too boring

I didnt realise how much of a fashion disaster I was until I got some recent photos..Bulky fluoro pink buoyancy vest with yellow wetsuit..yuck.. Maybe I can use the excuse that Im an artist so its ok to be eccentric..? One look at me & the sharks will run.. I hope.
Yes I recognised some of my old sails in that video..
