Hi there

I stopped w/surfing in 1996. At the time I was a reasonable flat water sailor, could jibe, water start. I had a bic presto, then a tiga 268 and yellow polakow custom slalom. A range of slalom and race sales from 4 to 7m with cams. I used to sale at goolwa near the barrages, black point and lake George (sa).

Anyway, I'd like to get back into it. Probably sailing at boggy to start with. Flats water rather than waves. I'm a big boy. 130kg but fairly fit.

Gear has has changed a lot. I'm trying to catch up, but there isn't even a sa shop anymore to go to!

It was recommended to me to get a larger volume board, about 160l, to start with and around a 7.5m sale for a 15-25kn range. Also to see if anyone had any second hand gear so I could get a feel for it again before spending serious coin.

id welcome any views or suggestions pls. Also if anybody has any such second hand gear for sale?

Thanks!!

The buy and sell section on this web site is your best place to find gear. Most of the windsurf shops advertise their second hand gear on here also. You'll get plenty of replies on here as to what gear to aim for so I'll leave that part to the experts

Welcome back. A great option that some of our bigger lads use is the Patrik freeride 155. Good volume distribution, great control and gybing for a board that size. I think that shape like this that, relative to the short wide freerides, is a better option. Larger Tabou Rocket might be an option too.

@ 130 kilos, you are a BIG lad ...
as someone said - @ least 160 liters
at 100 kilos when I started shortboarding, I started with a 160/80 cm board - litres and width are your friends

assume you are also strong ...
i started with 7.x sails and with your weight I would suggest 8.x

maybe you can check Auzzie website:

You are gonna love it. I just got back into it last year after 15 years off. The big cam sails have massive wind range now so don't be shy. At 130kg it will be nuclear befor you will want less than a 7m. I'm 105kg And all last summer only used 7.8 and 9.7 I've got a never used 6.3. Try something like a jp super light wind. It's 92cm wide. It's a gem. Patrick, rrd and starboard have similar concept boards.

I'm 120 kg and I started three years ago after a twenty five year break. After buying a very old complete $ 50 long board out of curiosity ( as I thought I was too old and unfit ) was plesntly surprised that I still had some residual skill. I instantly got the bug and wondered why I ever gave it up. So quite quickly needed more sports performance. I started with an older Starboard Go 170 litre and a new 6.5 m rig. Amazing speed , turning and ease of use compared to what I remember , and this is from a big wide floaty board. Then I wanted more power , 8.7m . Now four boards and six sails later , just try stopping me ! I don't have the fitness and balance as I used to but I don't care . I still love blasting along , getting a little air and trying to perfect the carve give . Still use the 170 on light days because I love it for getting me back in the swing of things. Totally hooked and in love with life again ! My advice is to get a 160 - 220 litre board at least 85 wide and a 7 ish metre sail. After that you will know what you want next. Welcome back !
