Hi guys,

i've read that epoxy with microbaloons mix is not waterproof.

(...) Although not as waterproof as glass bubbles, microballoons are often preferred for their excellent sanding characteristics. (...)

is a thick (6mm) layer of epoxy microballoons mix over 4mm airex waterproof?

Regards,

maybe, but it will be heavy! airex is closed cell, so that should be waterproof.

airex has very low water absorption. Micro balloons is nothing more than a non structural filler.. 6mm is about 5.5mm thicker than I would use on a board.

to seal a board you need paint or some type of uv resistant finish coat.

Microballoon fills are quite porous, it will not be waterproof as an epoxy fill/fair mix. For boards its not too much of a big deal because they don't sit day in, day out in the water exposed to the elements like a boat.
Either way once fairing is complete, the surface should be sealed.
