I'm now the proud owner of an aluminium Ifoil and I'm looking for some insight into what to expect. The Ifoil fuselage is 115cm compared to 80cm on my moses 101. The front wing is 90cm wide compared to 70cm on the moses. I find the moses to be a very sensitive and responsive foil and when I go upwind on the small front wing I use my heading to depower i.e. I point into the wind until the sail backwinds slightly. I find this works well as long you don't jam it up to hard and pull away in time to maintain speed.
the Ifoil sticks out further forward than my moses by a decent amount So perhaps mast foot forward a bit? I can lean the board to windward a bit upwind but I like to get it over a bit further. Any tips besides get good much appreciated.
While I haven't sailed those two particularly, I have sailed similar. First, I'm jealous. I'd love to give the iFoil a go. Anyways, a few things come to mind. I think you'll find the iFoil more stable - not as responsive but more locked in which is good for driving it powered up. I don't think you'll find any differences from the wing width alone. You probably will find the more slippery iFoil will accelerate faster especially in lower winds so while it doesn't have the same area, you'll find that it winds up to speed much faster. As a few of us have mentioned, you may find that despite the lesser area, you really won't give up much on the lower end. At the bottom end, it probably won't mush in like a bigger wing but plop down a bit more, instead.
Yeah, I'd try the mast base up a few cm. Hopefully, someone with a Starboard race rig can tell you what they are running for a front bolt to mast base measurement. Moving your back foot can help you until you have the mast base/boom height sorted. I do tend to put my boom a bit higher for a race type foil vs free ride so I can hang harder on the boom going upwind. But I"m a crappy racer so I may be doing it wrong.
Let us know how it goes.
Keep the tips coming. It is pretty obvious that race is different from freeride.
I will be trying out a Moses 105 Race on a stock formula board (Mike's Lab L6) in March. Tips here will help me shorten the race-gear learning curve.
Since I have been freeride foiling for 2-1/2 years, I'm hoping the transition to the race gear will be fairly OK.
I know Luuc van Opzeeland (IFCA WC with the SB Race Pro) runs about 110-116cm from the front bolt. Most of the people on starboard foils are around that mark. But thats talking the older version fuselage, I'm not sure if that directly translates to the new + fuselages but I guess its a good start. You could send Kiran Badloe or Aaron McIntosh a message on fb, in my experience they'll happily give you some tips!
As for the transition, my own experience was that the racekit is way easier to use, way more stable and blocked. Its just also more powerfull but that is not necessarily a bad thing, also in more wind, especially since you already know how to depower.
I have the ifoil (or I parted it together myself). Start with 110cm. The foil is super stable, but you'll need a little more speed to get up vs. a hover type foil. Good luck!
