Thumbs Up

So I went for my fifth foiling session at the inaugural foiling race at rams gate beach (spoiler, I didn't win!).

But it in a way I did win, because experience pays off, and there was a wealth of experience at this event. Special thanks to Ian who let me try his foiling formula board, which I crashed as much as my own.. but when I got back to the beach he explained what I was doing wrong. So helpful getting a coaching session, even if it is only 10'mjnutes.

Sail a foil like you're beginning. I mean when you started sailing in light winds on a long board you held the sail away from you to windward and barely trusted it so you were reluctant to lean back for fear of falling in. Well so to on a foil, the counter weight of the sail on the leeward rail somehow balances the lift better so that I could finally keep the nose down!!!! Hurray!!!

From there you can sheet in a little and go faster. In terms of stance you will end up more upright, weighting the board, not outboard pushing horizontally against the rail. I suppose this has implications for max speed which may be addressed by rogling the whole kit to windward, but let's save that for another day.

Thanks again Ian!

Happy foiling!
