This is the closest I can get to JJ, Mr. Smooth and the Western Australia crew awesome foiling videos!
I started my wind foiling journey on a gusty manmade lake in North Texas and recently moved to east coast of Florida and so far, it has not let me down.
So many different challenges, just launching out through surf is one of them, luckily on this day it was relatively easy! Not big surf but enough to go down the line and actually wave wind foil for the very first time. It is by far the ultimate sensation, a cross between adrenaline and pucker level 10 ![]()
The equipment I was riding was the Phantasm PFI730, 92cm mast, 400 rear, 872 (long fuse) wizard 130 and Naish 4.0 sail.
Nice Dean! I really need to get off the river and get out there. Ocean foiling will by my 2022 goal.

Anytime you want to go, let me know Brian. Launching at JP is definitely a commitment getting the kit down and back but it's so worth it.
Looking forward to getting some more North winds ![]()
That looks like a serious commitment, just getting the gear down to the water!
Great video!!
It really is Jim. According to my Garmin I walked 15,000+ steps that day. Burnt enough calories for several golden liquid refreshments ![]()
Sweet! Thanks, Dean. Looks like you made a very good move. Where is everyone???? How often does this happen?

Cheers mate, it was an awesome move! when there is no wind the surf is pumping, so there is always something to do on the water.
There were a couple of wingers that day but I think it caught most people by surprise as the wind picked up fast. From my understanding the North winds start in Nov and go through to around April/May, hopefully we will get more soon, I cannot wait.

Oh, if you are new to Florida, yeah, North winds are coming, but on the West coast they get balanced with South winds, best of both!
Thanks for the video Dean.
Looks like a super cool spot. Down the line on a windfoil..Yeewwww
Assume it's a Sandy bottom, did you ever touch?
Never want to pull out early but running out of water depth is also a bad idea.
Hope you get more Frothers to join you, and keep the footage coming ![]()
Sweet, it looked cross offshore Dean. I really like the down the line carving.
By the way, how deep was it when you were heading out through the breaking waves.

Super vid Dean, stoked you finally got to windfoil waves - the DTL was sweet ![]()
Awesome edit, love the different camera angles - I'll have to lift my game ![]()
Very cool! I tried to get into Jetty Park last year when they had more onshore conditions (almost dead East), and ended up having to go just south of there at Cocoa. Had a rough time due to it being pretty onshore and me being clueless.
Those waves look really nice and clean on the outside, a little bit bigger than when we had side/off here in the gulf. I've pushed through shore break on that with the i76 similarly, and have seen some wingers ride it. The Blast I have isn't quite set up for foil wave riding though.
You're making me wonder if I should grab a Wizard for these kinds of conditions and to be able to get a center strap and possibly even get okay at winging on it...
Thanks Dean! I love that spot and how the Jetty and the Cape keep the chop down and groom the lines.
Thanks All, this has been a dream to wind foil in these types of conditions and I am looking forward to pushing harder when the conditions line up again.
The whole coastline here is one very long sandy beach and on a big swell it's nearly impossible to get out through the shore break, it can be 4-5ft which is super tricky with a foil. JP has a concrete pier that allows you a small window to get out through the waves but there is also no wind right in the corner, so you have to be pretty swift uphauling then bear off to the wind line, once out the back its so smooth in a North or Northeast wind.
@Sandman, I am looking forward to some good south winds, it will be fun to explore other locations and foil out on starboard tack.
@Simon, it is sandy bottom there, the further you go south there are some nightmare rocks right below the surface but that's some miles away. It was very shallow there, in the video if you saw that surfer in the water, I went to the right of him, it was probably chest deep there, go another 10 ft and its waist deep on the sand bar. The sand bars also move around, so you have to stay high on the foil.
@John, it was shallow, I wanted to push it further inside but didn't want to damage the Phantasm foil, it's too difficult right now getting spare parts, lol.
@JJ, cheers buddy, I should have gone boom clew mount to get that third angle (like in your vids) but it was too sketchy to keep going in and out of the Shore break, once out the back I stay out there, ha!
@areo, East winds are super difficult, the waves are big of course but the percentages go way up on kit and bodily damages!
@UTC, JP is my fav beach, hopefully we will get many more days over the winter. If you head over this way, let me know buddy.
Very Nice Dean,
looks like you are moving at some great speed in those swells.
The flat sections between the sets were so nice, in fact I had to almost slow it down to stay on the wave at times
the PFI730 is a very stable wing at high speed so you can go pretty quick without even realizing it.
