As a novice to foiling, I find the posts in this forum to be fascinating. While I've only scratched the surface of what's possible with a foil, I'm curious to learn from those of you with more experience about potential speeds of a racing foil board (say, the new Olympic class Starboard iQFoil) as compared to a Formula Board.
To put the question another way, in moderate wind conditions with riders of similar skill, who would win around the race course: the foiler or the finner?
The fin is not even close, the foil is now that much faster. When we first started racing foils years ago the Formula boards were only a touch slower, after a few years of development the speed difference around the course is enormous.
This is what light wind foiling (5-11 knots) looks like. I can't remember speeds like this in formula racing with so little wind.
So I thought my wind min. was 8 knots with AFS W95 F1080 wing and Aerotech Freespeed 9.0, but as I got more efficient started using my FS 8.0 in 8-10 knots. Now looking at sub 8 on occasion and thinking of trying my " retired" FS 9.0. Want to get out with the kitefoilers in 6-8 knots, but I have 30 lbs or more on those guys.
