Probably a bit of a boring topic but IMO getting going again in Waves on a Windfoil is easier than on a Windsurfer because the board is bigger. And easier than folks on small Wingfoil boards. At my age EASY is important ![]()
Of the waterstarts I had recorded this was actually one of the longer ones. At times I was back on the board in close to 20 seconds which usually only means having to deal with one wave washing over me.

Hmm. Not in my case. Went from a 125 wave slapper to a 114 foil board. I mostly up haul though using such small sails. I prefer water starting, but wind is too inconsistent where I live.
Smaller boards are far easier to manage in real waves. I'm messy chop wing boards are simpler still, especially when barely powered.

I agree that smaller is more manageable(gets pushed around less) however I find it a lot easier to waterstart and get going on my 110L foil board than the 80L foil board or 90L wave board. The vid is intended to show that water starting in reef waves is doable, particularly if you can get up and going quickly. If I had not got up before the last wave I would have been swimming after my gear. Which does happen ![]()
As a foot note if a winger goes down in the break they don't usually get going as easily as water starting. The wing won't sink and the boards are so small it hard to get started again until they clear the break.
Oh Grantmac I call a wave anything with over a 3 ft face since I have started foiling in them because its all I need to have fun. Maybe check out the windsurfer down the line in the vid thumbnail and let me know if that's a real wave.![]()
Has anyone managed this in waves/swells? I can do it sometimes in flat water on my foil board but it's not as reliable at all as a powered up regular waterstart.
Most I've done in waves/swells with a foil board is grabbing the mast. My early unsuccessful attempts were with a fin board and big freeride sail (>8.0), but the floppy sail foot makes it a lot harder than something with a more taught foot like a freek or blade.
I'm waiting for the Balz / Severne video of how he water starts in 5ft waves in 30kts of breeze on a no nose compact foil board with a sub 3m sail

Haven't seen that but I have seen this starting sequence right after initial clip. Starts at 1:05. But he also gets in a position where he'd be getting a foot full of foil here.
