I'm just trying to learn this foiling game.
Out yesterday in wind with the local tower reporting 10-15kts, almost no whitecaps to be seen, using 5.7m sail on a 1220cm wing it was just soooo easy to pump onto the foil, completely unlike how I go with a fin in much stronger wind.
Is this a common experience, or am I special?
Nah your not that special, but foiling is. As soon as you have enough pressure in sail to balance lift from foil you are away ![]()
Can get going in 12 knots on 4.8 with similar size foil.
Enjoy!!!
BTW we are all a little bit special in our own peculiar ways ![]()

uhm, that is kind of the whole point why people go foiling.
Fun isnt it?
and for older people its the wat to prolong their windsurfing 'career'.
its way less intens on the body in comparison to conventional windsurfing.
Well i guess your special after all
.
probably bruised because you are learning to foil.
When you get the hang of it and your setup is nicely balanced its like a walk in the park.
I dunno about it being easier on the body. I'm carrying bruises from the crashes when I breach
IF you survive the learning curve it is easier on the body. I suffer from back issues and tendonitis in the fore arms and foiling lowers the sail loads enough that it is sustainable for me.
Foiling is about keeping it down not getting it up!!![]()
It's more front footed than fin. As soon as you fly focus on controlling the lift.
Take it slow, you will get it! Congrats on taking the leap!
Welcome!
If you need tips on the breaching thing, let us know. Otherwise, let us just celebrate your joy. ![]()

This for sure. It's more technique than strength compared to windsurfing IME. Learning curve is rough, but gets way easier especially after you are doing flying jibes. I'm 61 and recently did 64 miles over ~ 7 hours with a food break in between. Getting balanced in the harness was key to long sessions.

If you don't let go the boom, then you swing clear of the board, foil and boom when you crash

I've been windfoiling for couple years now and I'm not overly talented but after I figured how to set up kit and found it so easy on my old decrepit worn out body (at the age almost 70 !.) The harness is definitely key to long distances cruising also I've had plenty of crashes but definitely keep old of boom to reduce injury. I have been thinking of trying winging as been told easier than wind foiling and safer but, I don't want start the learning process all over again and buy more kit ( it appears wingers spend lot time on knees and mine knackered) sorry for goin of topic a bit .So my thoughts are windfoiling definitely extends life on the water for older foke but lighter winds too and is easy when you have the right kit , and set up well.
