Just took delivery of my second hand Severne Redwing windfoil. Very happy with it until I tried to mount it to my board(s). The connector is Deep Tuttle and put the mast in the toolbox, so far so good. When I tried to secure the mast I ran into a problem....
Severne seems to be using M8 bolts and my Goya (Airbolt and Bolt) have only space for M6 bolts..... Anyone had this problem or knows a solution?

When I got my Fanatic Blast in 2020 it had m6 holes in the board and I had to drill it out to fit the larger slingshot m8's without the m6 m8 to m6 fittings.
If you can still get them, slingshot made Titanium m8 to m6 adapters, look like they do. Just make sure to use a lot of tefgel on the inner/outer so they don't seize on the mast.

Thanks aeroegnr, I called around a bit but it looks like the fittings are not available in my neck of the woods. You mentioned drilling (I also found a Slingshot video on this), how easy or scary was this for you?

It was a bit intimidating just because I'm less handy than I would like. The main issue was getting the alignment correct. If you have a large drill press it would be a cinch, but I did it by hand in my apartment at the time.I also got some larger washers for my fin screws so that when I use the board for a fin, it's not a problem. I would double check to make sure it's not a problem to drill out those particular boards. I can't remember if I talked to Fanatic or someone else but it hasn't been a problem (and I only use that board for finning now).
Will check with the Goya importer. I have a large drill press, so tomorrow (after an OK from the importer) I will have a go at it. Will report back...
you're only drilling the holes in the board right? Drill will follow the pilot hole so just grab an 8.5 and go for it. A drill press will stuff it up as its not vertical and you will spend a day trying to align the board for a crooked hole in the end.
Yeah you would want the drill to float so it follows the original hole, a fixed drill press is not what you want.

.....and the saga continuous.
After drilling out the holes, the bolts went through, so far so good. However, I was to run into the next (more) serious problem. Trying to screw the bolts into the, inserted, deep tuttle adapter without succes. The bolts simply won't 'bite' into the thread of the adapter. Asked around and the advice was to make the holes oval, still nothing.
When, not completely, inserting the adapter (have it hovering in tuttle box) the bolts go in as one could expect. So thread of adapter is not perpendicular to box it sits in (anyone still with me?). Called around and was told this is a known problem with, for example J.P. boards (and Redwing). Tried to shim the mast but to get things right I would have to shim the mast towards the nose. That's not going to work on the water.
A simple workaround would be using the U.S. boxes for mounting the foil (board has both U.S. boxes and D.T.), but Severne has no top plate adapter (yet?).
I hope anyone was able to follow this write up and has another idea?
It's the bolt angle
Barrel nuts can rotate in the mast head for that reason. longer bolts have less tolerance for an angle problem so yes you might to elongate holes in the chimneys
if you want an adapter don't wait for Severne - they're already available
eg. Sabfoil one. But they ain't cheap
Color the bolts with a marker.
Install the foil as far as that goes.
Where the bolt jams, the marker will have been rubbed off.
Now you know approximately at what height the bolt jams.
Now you can adjust the hole with a round file.
But maybe as mark mentioned the problem is that the barrel nuts are turning.
Thanks for the advice. It's not the barrel nuts as the mast head doesn't have any. Bolt holes directly threaded into the aluminium block (as far as I can see).

Either it's a faulty adaptor. Not serving it's purpose to directly connect.
Or, a bigger hole and softer washers (not rubber) needed on the top side. You have a few mm tolerance.
Try dropping a line to the people at North Beach Windsurfing (nbwindsurfing.com). They carry both brands and will most likely have found a simple solution. I'm guessing that ovalizing the holes would work but they'll know for sure.
After elongating the holes I ran in to the next problem..... the screws had to go in under such an angle that the heads of the screw hit the sides of the holes of the deep tuttle insert in the board. Pictures would clarify, but somehow it won't let me upload this pic.
As windfoiling is not that popular in The Netherlands and second hand gear is not moving on second hand websites, I was able to pick up an unused GA Foils Hybrid windfoil. I chose this one for the good test results and the fact that if this mast wouldn't fit as wel I could put a plate adapter on the mast. It arrived this morning and fits like a charm (thanks to the 'moving' barrel nuts I guess). So problem solved.
What I like about the Redwing is that all bolts are hex, all solid M8. For the Hybrid you need a Philips head and hex key (bolts are M6). But hey, rather have a foil that fits! Now lets hope for some wind and time.....
