Hi all a friend has asked me what foil he should upgrade to from his slingshot i76
I'm abit out of the game now and not sure who is left in the market
I have the starboard iq foil probably a bit to straight line full on for him
And the slingshot ptm928 maybe to slow and the corrosion on the fuselage has put me of slingshot
So can't recommend that platform
Any suggestions would be most welcome
Thanks

Slingshot changed their whole fuse/mast attachment a few years back. Honestly a used one would probably be at a good price.

However, I wouldn't consider a 928 a big upgrade. The 926 is my new all-rounder after the i76 if I don't use a SB race foil. There may be a good used deal out there because they switched to yet another fuse design. There are decent newer wings on that platform too, and a variety of tails (including the vee) that you may find for a decent price and still be an upgrade without throwing down for a different platform.

Some people have moved on to aeon/phantom here though and I haven't been able to ride them for an opinion yet. The phantasm gear was more common for a while.

Depending on what he wants to spend? One might find a good deal on slingshot phantasm. In the US most is sold out I would look for PTM 899 or maybe G800 front wings with a 340 tail 87W aluminum is not a bad mast of course an 872 fuse. I would also look at SAB the older 799 front is a proven winner now it's one of their legacy wings with lower pricing . Axis is another choice the HPS front wings still work well for windfoiling and the 19mm aluminum mast is still one of the stiffest is you don't want to spend money on carbon.

Looks like we are both sailing the same kit
I have the original slingshot 730 front wing aswell that never comes out
I like the ptm for glide it's just the corrosion that kills the platform for me I see they don't even do the wind foil fuse anymore so that leaves it obsolete in a year or 2

Axis is a brand I haven't seen much of although I think they are avaliable in the uk I will have a look

Sabfoil 799 works well for me much of the time. Keep meaning to get a 909 to go with the 769 but use the 799 time and again paired with 5.2m.

Kraken base = tighten one screw and go enjoy yourself, love the lack of faffing time.

Yeah definitely. Mine hasn't corroded too much, hopefully I'll get some more miles out of it before it's done and I am forced to scrape up some used kits or move to a different platform or give in and do winging again.

Most brands seem to make pretty good stuff now. You won't find anything directly marketed at freeride windfoiling but that's OK there's enough cross over with wingfoiling.

Big factor for me is what does your local shop/distributor stock? I've found as both my skills and foils have improved, the ability to got to the local shop and try things out has been gold.

The 909 is all I use!! Have the 769 but used it once since getting the 909. The wind range with small sails (4.8,4.0 & 3.3) is all I need in short period swell

The Phantasm mast and fuse have been great for me, but I'm in fresh water, so no corrosion after >2 years of heavy use. The only front wing i use now is the sab 769 medusa which fits the phantasm fuse perfectly. The SS 360 V tail is my favorite rear wing.

I also have phantasm foil gear and didn't really notice the fuse corrosion taking place. I sail only in salt water and often. I invested in a can Lanox spray (lanolin) . A light spray after a sail and a wipe down before the next sail put an end to further corrosion.

I would pick a brand that still supports freewide windfoil, eg 90ish cm fuselages. And a brand that sells a variety of front wings so they can find something that suits their style and conditions. However, if he is coming off i76 can't go wrong with sabfoil 799 and/or 909

I switched from Slingshot to Axxis after I lost the last mast, fuselage and wing after the mast snapped at the base.

I found the Art 899 is probably the closest they have to the i76... It's got a slightly lower stall speed and a little bit higher top speed. It turns a lot better though and doesn't have a tendency to foil out. That's on the Axxis windsurf V2 fuselage. With the standard length fuselage the setup becomes a bit more sensitive to where you set in the board.

There are a quite a few shops here in Australia that stop Axxis so getting replacement parts is relatively easy. Might be different in your part of the world. That would probably be my recommendation... get what's easily available at your local shops.

Aeroegnr I'm on my 3rd fues now
It's partly due to me not washing it down and leaving it out to dry after every session
Although I treat my starboard the same I have owend it longer and almost no corrosion atall
I am considering seing if I can get a custom carbon
Made
The foils are good and I have a sab 799 pro that bolts strait on although I haven't tryed it yet
Could be fun

Yes I am really lax with cleaning thing too, as I'm cramped for space inside my car, and I sail in saltwater only. That sucks. Maybe I've just been lucky with corrosion. I'm also wondering if it's because I have aluminum masts? Is your mast carbon?

The SB has that plastic isolator/shim between mast and fuse too.

I am reticent to say this, but I have had hundreds of sessions on my phantasm without a fuselage failure.

Compared to starboard where I have broken them in less time that it takes to get a warranty replacement. (5 total failures before i switched)

Yes carbon mast.
thats a interesting thought about the pplastic insert
I would have thought the screws would have made the connection and created the same environment
Maybe not so ?

I'm UK based and using Starboard kit (foil freeride 150 and Evo mk1 fuse). There seems to be plenty of new cheap SB kit on sale (old Plus or Evo stuff), especially as they've recently launched the universal connect system. Try Tushingham on eBay, Boardwise or Surf Doctor.
