He won but was DQed. He beat the fin guys in huge wind on a 350 wing. Amazing result. Shows what is possible with foiling.
Will the bell ring for the diehard fin only boys ?, or do they consider that just a lucky heat ![]()

According to Ben P he actually won several heats and finished second in the other. His foil is smaller than my stab (and probably as sharp as my chef's knife). Crazy.
Signing in is more than just your name.
Maybe declaration of every wing, fuze, stab, and parts is needed.
Beauty in the details.

Signing in not registration.
They have to sign in and sign out after the race so they know that all the sailors have come ashore after the race. Its 30+ knots offshore wind, 9k legs (usually longer) and 200+ sailors (usually 1000). Very easy to lose someone at sea.

Nico Goyard finished 26th in race 2.
By my calculation, if he had signed in for race 6 and won he would have finished on 30.8. Albeau would have still won overall on 24.7.

He forgot to sign out , but all in all (after 7 races) Antoine Albeau won the defi.
First two races were a disaster for NG, he lost his foil on the first and tore his sail on the second.
Being DSQ meant he couldn't discard a result.
So after those two races there was no way he could win it, his brother Thomas though was leading for a while.
Race seven was epic to watch with a duel between him (on foil) and Pierre Mortefon (fin), with Pierre taking the win on the last reach. (only to be be DSQ'd too !!!)
All the directs are on the defi's FB page (and in frenglish too !)
awesome to see people (not average people though ) foiling and winning in those conditions !

Lots of sailors used foils in lighter winds at the start of the event. In Ben Proffit's interviews several said they didnt have a foil wings small enough for the really windy days. The PWA slalom sailors would pick fins for proper downwind slalom, so doubt they have trained on smaller foil wings.
Four wins in 7 races for the Goyard brothers is pretty impressive. But why are there fewer than 200 racers listed in the results? I thought previous events had 1000+ participants.

Seemed like they had a kind of knock out where a certain number of the lower groups got to race with the super stars. There were at least 200 in the first race and only 80 or so made it through so total sailors where more than 200...

With Covid restricitons a usual Defi (with more than a1000 riders) was not allowed.
Therefore Bru and team decided to run a superstar event (smaller) like they did in japan . With qualification heats for the average competitor would wanted to enter and move on to the superstar event.
for years the defi had coincided with a pwa event (costa brava if I recall) thus no pwa riders would enter if they had chances to score at the pwa event.
this year with no pwa it was a great opportunity for the defi to have the big guns enter the show, AND sign a partnership for the coming years with a struggling PWA world tour. (smart move from Bru)

Shows the potential if you have the skill to maximize the gear. Reality? All relative. No matter what the gear. I will never average +40kts over 500 meters on a fin. Maybe with quality slalom gear +30 kts on fin and maybe as foils evolve 30kts on foil. Either way. I'm still slower than slow.

Kind of annoying thread title, when it is actually Antoine Albeau and Blanca Albeau who won the Defi ... talk about fake news!
Right now Goyard seems to be the only one who can keep going on foil above a certain wind speed. But it is just a matter of time before others join in and unless fins enter another step in development the conditions in which they can beat a foil are shrinking!
Also keep in mind that this was a long distance race , with heaths lasting 20 or 30 km's, where the foil was able to gain much less advantage from the jibes than in the Tiberias event.
I agree that the title is Fake News. Title should be N Goyard wins race with 350 front wing, but lost defi.

And to think we all spent decades trying to perfect our slapper gybes. Oh well, such is life.
