Hi Uwe, I have the MFC One7 Pro Carbon, with both Freeride and Race wings and stabilisers. Unfortunately I have not yet used enough to provide a detailed review, nor have I experienced any other foils to compare to. At least I can say that it is a very well designed and constructed piece.
The little use I have had was on my Starboard Formula 167 with Pryde EvoIV 8.6m, and a Goya Slalom 75cm wide with 4m Goya Banzai sail.
It is a high aspect wing, in comparison to other free rides on the market, being 80cm span and 970cm/2 area. I was impressed that I could fly on first try on the Goya with such a small sail (I am 90kg). I am no good judge of wind strength, but I first took this kit out on demo when I could not plane on my usual 95l wave board and 5m, so guessing around 14 knots.
On the formula, it was up and flying with the 8.6 in less wind than I would normally plane with a 12m, although I think it may be even better suited to a smaller board. The race foil on the formula seems smoother and faster. Difficult to compare, because conditions were very different when I demoed each, plenty wind when on the race foil, very light with the free ride.
When flying, it is pretty easy, fast, stable and controllable. Again, I can't compare to other foils, but I can't really fault it either.
I can report back with more as I get to use it, or any other details and specs you'd like to know. I'd also like to know other's opinions or comparisons. Cheers, Ben
Ok, so out on the Free Ride foil today, with Formula board and Goya 3-batten Fringe 5.7m sail.
Gusty, offshore wind from 5-20 knots, would normally sail Slalom 80cm wide and 8.6m in these conditions (if at all), but flying on the foil no problem - big advantage is I could sail back to the beach into the shifty irregular winds, impossible on the slalom kit. Again, I was surprised how easy to fly even this time, relatively small sail with Formula board. When rigging up, I was really not expecting much flying today, just hoping to enjoy being back on the water and reacquainting with the gear.
I would say this is on the faster side of Free Ride foils. Gets up and going with ease and stays up, accelerating with good upwind angles - FAST. Probably not so suited to downwind, swell riding, like the big Slingshot and Cruiser foils reviewed in other threads here. I think it may be too fast, and wants the extra power from the sail to stay flying. I can't see it just luffing off and surfing the swells. Perhaps with more practice though, it could be tamed, as it is very responsive under foot, some pretty wild carving turns and dives were experienced, fully unintentionally. Fortunately always recovered without issue, so far.
Stoked to now know how well it does work on the Formula with small sail. Before I was thinking the Slalom board may work better. The Slalom board is currently being converted to deep tuttle foil box, so looking forward to flying on that soon. Will report back on that setup.
It comes with 2 wedges for the stabiliser. I used the biggest for most lift once to test, but found it too flighty when up.
I didn't really notice any advantage in getting going either. I find it more responsive to back foot position and pressure, so do not use the shims at all now.
