Just wondering if anyone can suggest how I can set my gear up for speed. I'm using 90L Slingshot Wizard with Fanatic AL 3.0 foil (90cm mast / 90cm fuse) with Aero Free 800cm2 front wing. This wing can be pretty quick with how I've got things set at the moment, but I reckon I can make the fuc#er go faster. Haven't played around with settings to try this yet. I'm wondering if any one has any suggestions or might know the optimal setting for speed with the gear I'm using. Also have flow 1000 front wing but I'm guessing the 800 will be faster. Only using small wave sails 2.8, 3.3, 3.5 in moderate to strong wind. 15 - 30 ish kts.
I have stab shims but no mast shims .
Also been using the 215 stab with the 800 front wing which is the matching stab for windfoiling. But maybe the 216 stab that is matched to 800 for winging might work. I know this stab is quicker and why , but haven't tried it for windfoiling yet. It's not as laterally stable and has less lift. Maybe it will work ?
Im foiling on relatively flat water on the lake.
do you have a gps device so you can review your tracks?
Are you after better speeds on all angles or want to reach a higher max. speed ?

I want a faster average speed on all angles.
Don't have a gps but i don't want or need to know how fast i'm going, I just want to feel like i'm going faster.
Changing little things in your equipment will not make you feel more speed. Get a wider board with straps far outside, a big chambered foilsail 8m or bigger and a dedicated racefoil, then you get palpable faster. Maybe ![]()

Or more scared...
I was on this kind of gear this past weekend in 12-23 kts. The foil was making its "fast" noises downwind.
He can go faster on his gear - needs more power, though, imho. At my paltry 62 kg, I'd be using a 5.4 or 4.7 for most of that wind range on freeride gear. That's going to make a much bigger difference than waffling about with stabs. Don't deshim too much trying to go faster; only if you are getting too much front foot pressure. And make sure you are using longish harness lines so you can get low and keep the power on.
Lastly, get a gps. An old Android phone in a pouch with the Windsport Tracker www.windsporttracker.com is really good because it gives audible call outs. That way you know what fast is as opposed to just feeling out of control (which isn't necessarily fast).
I don't know that specific gear but on both my setups (Taaroa and Starboard) I reach highest speed with the least lift from the stab. I'll set the stab up negative except when I'm underpowered in which case that would make me too back-footed.
I also think using a speed-oriented larger sail will yield real benefits. Doesn't need to be a foil sail either (although they're great). If you put a Freeride or Freeslalom 6.5 on that same setup in 15-18 you just won't believe how fast you can push it.

A topic for another thread but I think a lot of freeriders make riding unnecessarily hard following this advice and end up with a board more difficult to jibe and load up the harness; and only nominally faster. Over the weekend, I was out in some pretty stiff breezes on my race kit (8.0 and IQ900). I had been pleasantly surprised how the board was handling and easy it jibed; and even more surprised when I went to switch wings and stab angles that I'd been on the "wrong" shim - inadvertently overshimmed by a half of a degree.
Absolutely agree. ![]()
Bigger sail and commit to the harness with longer lines (30+ or adjustable). Straps outboard. Accept there will be bigger crashes until you get the muscle memory to deal with the faster speed.
Sail sizes I would be using at 78kg on wizard 105 using slingshot 65 wing 840cm2
15 5.3
18 4.7
20 4.1
22-5 3.7
25+ 3.3
All this is based on wanting to use wave sails, free ride foils which are not fast but are fun to push to 20+ knots. On the open ocean I can keep up with or overtake fin freeride fin gear. If you want to go properly fast then you need race gear.
Lots of tips here

I started with regular slalom sails.
Then I added a new clew eyelet above the long batten. then I got dedicated foil sails.
A GPS watch or phone is a a maxing tool to help you go faster and know what works. Live feedback from a watch really helps too!
The more i foil, the more i realize, it is (same as normal gear) about learning to push harder. Don't back off on the gust,
for me it was a whole reset when starting foiling. Back to learning to push in new scary situations (again).![]()

I've watched a few you tube videos on shimming and have thought about in the past but never bothered to play around with it. This weekend is looking good to try it.
I'm on a SS 114 with the PFI 730 lower kit. I use wave sails, and it seems I can do about exactly the wind speed. This is using an android phone and the wind sensor data from my boat dock. I did 21 knots today in the 21 knot gusts, but I can never go faster than the wind. I sheet in hard and send it down wind on a broad reach until there is no pressure in the sail, and that's my max. So no huge apparent wind like the race rigs. Maybe a full cambered race sail would help, IDK. I understand a smaller surface wing and stab would have less drag, but the 730 has a huge speed range and I hate slogging

What sail did you have up to do 21 in 21? If you lose pressure in the sail, head back up until you find another gust and/or regain the pressure. It's easy to go too deep which is "less fast". I was making this mistake and a much better foiler gave me the advice.

I was in a goya fringe 3.7. I do exactly as you described. Head up to increase sail pressure to get max speed. I repeat that cycle until I have to jibe.

Ya, that would be the next purchase if I can figure out what I want. I also have the g800, which is a great carvey wing, but at my weight, should have gone with the g700.

Actually, that's pretty impressive in its own right. In that case, BSN101's prescription.
Going downwind at those speeds, you have very little apparent wind. As mentioned above, I'm not very heavy and in those conditions I've sailed with anything from a 4.7 freewave to 8.0 race. The beauty of foils is that they are very efficient at lower speeds allowing us to use much smaller sails. However, when we start to hit the drag wall at higher speeds, we either need to move that wall (smaller wings as you've been discussing above) or increase the power. Even a 5-5.5ish freeride nocam will be a noticeable improvement and still within the realm of easy to use (by example, azymuth's post above) .

Here's my tracks from last Sunday. It was rather hairy out there on 6.2 3 cam sail but on my last run I did the long run to the left and the blue line is my Nm and at the end is my 24.5 peak. Cam sails help immensely and if I went out on a wave sail it would have been a 5 or 4.5. 750/190 wings. Come visit Busso for a sesh, plenty of room, 7.5km spread between gybes.

I need to get a gps. I wanna go for peaks too on the lake. Gonna go for 30kts on the Wizard 90L. Don't even know if that's possible. I might be a little over optimistic.

It's getting to the stage where it's possible to get purchase paralysis with all the choice.

Hahaa, for sure. That's where I'm at. No Demo's to try where I live.. The Sabfoil Medusa line is intriguing, and it seems will work with the SS fuse. Sooo many options...

Getting a GPS/watch/phone for data collection will take away doubt about improvements or not to your set up. Agree with the bigger sail comments. 6m in 20kts is my quickest setup, then it's down to me! Sailing at 90 degrees is one thing, 120 degrees fully committed is another story!!!! The challenge of going faster is awesome, good luck??
