Managed to have a first go winging on my wizard 125. Liking the idea of having one board for winging and windsurfing, maybe like the tabou magic carpet or simmer blackbird but the thing that puts me off is removing and reinstalling footstraps a heap of times. I remember back in the late 90's the windsurfing industry has solved this!
Any one had experience of the threads stripping after multiple fixings?
Maybe a two board solution is the way to go!
Fanatic had non-threaded footstrap inserts about 20 years ago. I had a Fanatic Bee 289. I guess the system worked, but I guess no one is using it now and it's probably patented.
One idea that Mark Raaphorst experimented with and explained the Blue Planet Show (#10) is to put the inserts on a removable board. I imagine you could just have a few metal-threaded inserts on the board body and then a "pad and straps deck" that you attach to the top of the board. I don't know if there's a market for that or if it's practical. Wing boards are pretty small and relatively inexpensive compared to windsurfing boards. There could be some weight savings on the main board body if the deck is a separate piece, but I think it would probably still end up being heavier and more expensive than a monolithic (single body) board.
My plan right now is to just leave the straps off the Magic Carpet.
I think a two board solution is most likely because of the volume differences between what people wing on versus sail on. But the secret to using the same strap positions for winging would be either a very long track or a board with tuttle under the back footstrap and tracks further forward, but this solution requires two foil masts.
I agree with the "thedoor". It's become a two board solution for me. The hybrid board's mast and strap position require too much adjusting on the RRD Pocket Rocket
and winging works on a much smaller board. My board quiver is now bigger....but the mast/foil quiver work on both boards.

Did you use the tuttle for windfoil and the tracks for winging? I was thinking that might solve the not needing to move footstraps...

Hello,
I got the magic carpet 120 that replace my wizard 125 for windfoil I do use the strap for winging I go strapless as it is more light wind. for higher wind I am thinking at the pocket air 97L or 87L that can be use for winging and wind foiling with same footstrap position moving the foil in the track

I have not tried wing foiling in the tuttle position. BUT I WILL!
For now;
Tuttle for WindFoiling (5.5-7.0 Sails). Awesum, strapped or strapless. Moses 1100 or 790. Works great!
US Box for Winging (5.0 - 7.0 Wing). Awesum, strapless only.... the strap holes are setup for Windsurfing only![]()
The issue is I now need 2 Foil Masts...one tuttle and one plate for an easy setup. More Euros to SABfoil/Moses....
Thought I could move the plate mast full aft and windfoil it. No Chance. The US Box is too far fwd. I moved the UJ/mast track fwd. Still a no go.
Great riding hybrid board...but I still carry too much gear.

I also have RRD Pocket Rocket 120. I use the same foil for windfoiling and wingfoiling. It's mounted on tracks but in different positions. No footstraps.

Did i say to try tuttle for winging? If I did that was an error. Sounds like you are currently doing what I thought would work, but the straps are too far back to use for winging, even when in the foil is in the US tracks?
Two masts might be a better solution than two boards, this way you could have a longer mast for windfoil eg 100cm and a shorter mast for winging eg 85

When riding windfoil are your feet approximately near where the straps would be?

Relatively close but not exactly where footstraps mounting holes are.
This evening session: wind was light at beginning. Around 10 knots. I rigged 5.8. First I had to pump a lot to get on foil. After about 30 minutes wind picked up and I switched to 5.0 wing and moved foil forward on tracks.

2 in 1 nice. My two in ones require two boards
2, 3 or 4-in-1 boards should really use metallic threaded inserts which are available through Chinook. Switch fasteners to Torx then you have a solution which just doesn't wear out and can easily be switched.
Hi. One question from my ignorance on wingfoiling. I see that there must be many people trying both windfoiling and wingfoiling initially and wants one board for all, but after trying do you still want to practice both? Don't you decide to go for one or another? What do you miss in winging / windfoilng compared with the other? It would be very interesting to know.
I remember when I tried to combine kitesurfing and windsurfing and it was a mess to rig both when the wind was around than 17 knots. I decided to give up kitesurfing and go for float and ride wavesailing in less than that wind strength.
On the other hand, I don't understand why the manufacturers don't put in this kind of hybrid boards only us box tracks long enough for both winging and windfoiling. It is more simple and a lighter board.
Cheers.
I think just about everyone who tries both windfoiling and winging will end up doing just one or the other (perhaps after some time where they may do both). Those who switch to 100% winging will usually get a dedicated (and smaller) wing board. The hydrid boards are primarily for the transition phase, and for those who don't know yet what they'll end up doing most. For learning to wing, they can be great, since the larger volume makes learning easier. There are some hybrid boards out there that have very long tracks and no tuttle box (JPs, for example).
If you start with windfoiling and then go to winging, it can take a while before you reach the same level of efficiency. That can be a reason to stick with windfoiling for a while on the lighter days. My wife did this for about a month or two while she was learning to wing, but then switched to 100% winging. She says it's overall more fun, and that playing with chop is a lot more fun. She also likes the higher rate of foiling through jibes (maybe 95% vs. 80%), and the ability to foil through tacks. Lighter equipment that's quicker to set up is a plus.
Some windfoil boards make great slog and ride wave boards, but they are all too big to wing well beyond the beginner stage.
