Hi Foilers,

Been watching America's Cup and thinking about my limited foiling experience and wondering if there is a database of windsurfing foil data out there anywhere? My foil seems to have a pretty fixed take-off speed and maximum speed that is independent of the sail I use and wind strength (providing I have enough wind for take-off). I've noticed similar patterns with the AC75's in the America's Cup.

Even if I'm incorrect about the fixed ranges I'd be keen to know if others are getting better results and there is room for improvement in my sailing!

My data is:
Foil: Naish 1150 Windsurf (on 145 Galaxy)
Take off speed: 10.5 knots
Max speed: 19.7 knots - I've had a few 2 second 20+ knots but never a 10 second 20+ - always breached and/or crashed! - can comfortably sail 500 m at 19 knots.

Keen to hear others opinions and data.

I have the same Naish foil and my max. 2sec is 20.1, but as soon as I gave it to a better guy than me he did 23 knts and said he reckons it could go faster...

While I have never tried the 1150, I have about 20 days on the 600.
Maybe around 2 knots faster than the 1220, it's lack of drag and extreme glide is noticeable.
However, we are in early spring still, and most light breeze days tend to vary from 4-22, so the big wing takes precedence over a wing that needs 11-20 to fly with confidence with a 5 meter sail.
I will install the 600 on the next thermal day, maybe Wed.

tintin.gwen (weight 100 kg) writes that on the wing, the performance from Loke Foil reached a speed of 26.5 knots.

Speed on a foil is also dependent on sea state, rider skill, stab angle, rider weight and general set up. Until you account for all of these, the numbers are just a rough estimate.

when we are blowing 9-10 knots and flat, I take the sail 9.4 and 9.6 and race perfectly on the slalom and fin with excellent speed. And when there is a weak wind with gusts of 8 knots, then you can fly slowly on the foil.

The only way to make this scientific is to test foil setups in a test tank and measure drag. Other variables would be different speeds, angles of attack, depth, stab angle, etc.
