Endless flowing carves ![]()
It's even more fun a km out where the windswells boost to 2m but my lens and crappy tripod has limits.

Great video JJ
Some fancy editing there
had some great crashes that day, prolly should have been on a 3.7 but when you bear away and accelerate down those swells it is nice to be fully powered
I certainly appreciate how good our conditions are, warm AND windy....Hollywood
Fantastic!
Couldn't have wished for more!
Warm and windy, how right you are. Went foiling in 3 degrees (air and water) today and anjoyed it too. Watching these smooth transitions makes me want to go out tomorrow again.

Cheers dude.
Awesome speed and power in your carves off the windswell ![]()
Windfoiling downwind is epic fun !!
Beautiful and inspiring.
What foil and mast you were using?

Such wretched conditions? ![]()
I swear if you saw the crapola winds we foil in you would be laughing your asses off or scratching your head saying "why"? ![]()
Once again a great video!! Great Sailing Boys.
Carving like this is so much FUN, particularly on a swell but not many riders seem to be into it where I sail; even in Maui. I think this type of Carving is unique to Windfoiling. As I believe it's due to the forces that can be transferred thru the mast foot. And I don't find it hard, Simon sure makes it look easy.
Azymuth, good to see you are rehabbing the knee on the beach![]()

Cheers Hess.
Totally agree, mast foot pressure helps utilise sail power in the carve on the swells.
I'd be stoked to see video of you windfoiling strapless downwind in Maui ![]()
Fantastic, you guys. I watch it before I go do bed like a meditation to relax.
Simon, how long are you out there for a session like this? How much of the session are you in the harness?

Most sessions are 1 & 1/2 hours plus, probably hooked in about 20% of the time.

As the photo shows, still carving but more finesse than physical
Still getting a kick out of every session
Looks like pretty damm good fun. I'm from SA and just wondering, where are you foiling? how strong is the wind?, what size board is Simon on?, and what makes the Simmer Tricera's a good foil sail opposed to a foil specific sail?

It's good fun alright - downwinding is the best ![]()

Simmer Tricera wavesails are light, strong and have good low-down power. Also de-power easily.
And Jesper sells them - so awesome friendly service ![]()

I can't see any benefit to using a foil-specific sail - not even sure what that would be in a freeride/wave/downwind-carving context.

Most foil specific sails have a high aspect... ie centre of gravity is higher up in the sail meaning there is more lift. In addition free ride cams make for a deeper profile. I think you'd find a 5.0 Freefoil sail will have almost as much low end power as a 6 sqm wave sail. In addition the weight tend to be same as of a wave sail.
Close second is probably a freestyle sail in terms of higher aspect providing more lift and bottom end power. Of course once the wind picks up it becomes less relevant. Even more so when you are riding ocean conditions in 20knts+.

Agreed,
the best spot for downwinding where i foil here in SA allows nice long runs and the ability to make it strait back to where you launched, often with out having to make a tack. Swell is not bad either, and i 'm the only wind foiler with mabey 2 wing dingers and a couple of kite foilers. The rest are all windsurfing closer to shore so no traffic in the swell out the back which is brilliant.
Good point on the sails. A foil specific sail might also deform in 20kn +. I wonder if they make them for strong wind. Might not want a super low cut foot either, like the foil specific sails have, when downwind carving in swell. I'll have to find out.

Did you end up getting the Wizard 103?
Sounds like you have great conditions, where is your downwinding spot?
It'd be awesome to see video ![]()

After finding out that i'll be comfortable on a 105 Wizard in 20kts, i decided to buy Simons 105 which is currently in transit. Coming down in size from a 120 Naish Hover Crossover i figured the 103 might be a bit much to handle. Mabey too nimble and agile, and too hard to uphaul if needed. And after watching you guys in strong wind on 105 or the equivalent new 115's, i'm sure i'll be where i need to be.
Another question too. I 'm 80kg's. Do you have any idea what would be the maximum comfortable wind speed or range my 80ks's could handle on the 105. My smallest sail is a 3.3, and assume i have a choice of SS infinity 65 & 76 wings to use with SS Hoverglide. I'll actually be using a Naish Jet foil with 1050 & 1250 (cm2), wings, the two smallest wings in the jet range. These sizes are surf / crossover wings so obviously turn and handle well in swell and waves.
I cant compare our conditions with other states as i haven't travelled outside SA for foiling or windsurfing. But i can say that the wind we get isn't as consistent or strong as what you guys get over there, or consistently strong and consistent, but this summer's been the best in a long time. If i had the 105 and skills i now have at the start of our season (roughly nov), i would have been on the 105 and probably 4.5 and under more than on the 120 Hover Co.
The best spot for downwinding is probably Seacliff (combination reef sand bottom) SW, cross on, downwinding on port tack (natural footed). Swell size around 1- 3 foot in summer. Mabey bigger. It's hard to judge size up on the foil cause every thing looks smaller.
I'll post some video at some stage. Don't know what it will be like. Will need get a go pro or something when i'm working again & the funds allow it.
The link below is to where i launch at Seacliff or Kingston Park. They're right next to each other.
www.google.com/maps/@-35.0381597,138.5158857,3a,60y,334.5h,100.38t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1s7tAUg56TjUpaGVsTseXSqg!2e0!7i13312!8i6656
I've also attached some pics of Seacliff from a gale force winter front. It's not normally as full on as in the pics. It's normally alot mellower. And alot, thankfully.
So much for a quick reply.

If you foil in less consistent winds the mast type/bend also plays a very important role especially for rig pumping.
higher aspect is great but if the mast pumps like a piece of wrought iron it will not give very good performance.
