Notice Of Race & event entry is on the website : windfoil.com.au
One board, one (foil) mast, any sails & foils - heaps of fun!![]()

This regatta is fast approaching - on Botany Bay 24th /25th February.
Please register for the event on the website - windfoil.com.au
The regatta is now called "The 2018 Downunder Pro Windfoil Championship" -

The notice of race has been updated to reflect this name change and also incorporates the following changes;
(1) There are now two divisions in the championship - Open & Free Foil. The latter is modelled on the "Free Formula" division that has been successful for a number of seasons in the formula class. The division is aimed at sailors new to racing, or don't necessarily have race-ready foiling equipment but want to get involved in the event. The Free Foil division will foil on the same "water" as the Open division but will race a shortened distance - either less number of laps or a shortened course. The start line will be common for all but the Free Foil division will start after Open fleet starts.
(2) To place in the 2018 Australian Windfoil Championship sailors need to have an official "AUS" sailing number, as issued by the AWA and foil in the Open division. All sailors in the Open division (including those from non- Australian nations) will be competing for the "2018 Downunder Pro Windfoil Championship".
Please download the NOR (v3) from the website for more detail.
It is worth repeating the equipment restrictions for the event;
Only one board can be used
Only one foiling mast can be used
Everything else is up to the sailor to choose. This means that there are no restrictions on the type or number of foils (as in main foil & stabiliser) that can be used, and no restrictions on the number or type of sails used.
Generally speaking we are aiming to race in winds less than 25 knots. The wind minimum will be judged by the RO, based on whether the majority of the fleet is flying for the majority of the time. This may be 10 knots. At best windspeed might be measured at the start boat, so is not really a good measure of the wind across the course. More details will be presented in the Sailing Instructions.
Note that running the FIRST windfoil regatta in Australia is a bit of a voyage of discovery, so we may not have things right. We will learn and make the next one even better!
Looks PRO ![]()
Make sure you guys takes plenty of pics and videos, I reckon that will be awesome to watch.
Well done everyone on getting this going.
Has anyone contacted the Greens as the last time we had a first fleet of something at botany bay it didn't end so well ![]()
This my level at the moment. I am in a race against time to get competent before the regatta starts. I like the free foil division concept, I think you progress more by entering rather than spectating. The Pro division will be very hard to finish in the time limit I am predicting. My skill level from the first outing till now, is huge (I put my first session on You Yube as well) but improvements from now will start to plateau I suppose. I will focus on sailing upwind and downwind and generally staying on the board with more fly time. I need to perfect my touch on getting the ride height just right.
Well done everyone on getting this going.

Hopefully we can finish a day ahead of the French this time too. ![]()
Justin,
Is that the hollow Patrick? Very impressed with your foiling but even more that you got a park at Balmoral. Its where the queen goes for Xmas you know.
Yeah a Patrik formula board . They only come as hollow these days.
Havent seen the Queen LOL she mustnt be taking holidays
It would be great to get someone with a drone to film some of the racing.
Not within 5.5km of an airport unfortunately...
I assume rule 4 means member of a sailing club like StormRiders???
Competitors shall be members of a National Class Association which is a paid up
member of the relevant international class association, or of the IWA. Membership formalities can be completed on site.
Really late notice, but I'm heading to Sydney early on Friday for the Windfoil nationals on Botany Bay. I have 2 spare seats & plenty of space for gear in my van. Heading back Sunday night to Holbrook & home by Monday lunch.
Call me asap on 0408 531 031 if you'd like to share the adventure.
Hi berowne,
Yes this is all about having the correct insurance. The easiest way is to be a member of an AWA affiliated club, like Stormriders.
The normal Australian "chain" is : Local club => State Association => AWA.
AWA provide the insurance via this "chain".
Hope to see you there.
YES. You must be a member of the Australian Windsurfing Association.
In some States you join your "State Association" directly eg SA, but most States you join an affiliated club e.g. Storm-riders in NSW.
You will be allocated an "AUS" sail number and receive 3rd party public Liability insurance, which is compulsory for competing in Windsurfing events in Australia.
Super easy to do, but not a good idea to leave to the last minute...Cheers
someone left a sail bag - 4.8 size, contact me to get it back
Is it a Gun? It's Justin's.
TEAM WA and QLD training. Also me at the end but I am really struggling in the strong winds ![]()
.be
Some very interesting sailing with the guy from 1.19 to 2.19
Yeah Elmo that was Brendon from QLD he raced in the pro fleet. really good control ![]()
I myself didnt enter cause of the forecast for my safety and the competitors safety. So disappointed with myself after buying a racing foil and trying it for a bit. Main problem was I had a massive stack about a week and a half out, got whiplash from it! That really block my confidence and progress ![]()
I manage to get some footage on Sunday, not great footage. Saturday was too far away from shore to see what was happening. So this ia all I got. Some more on FB by the official photographers.
