Downwinding swells - ultimate foiling fun

No waves in Perth in summer but the SW windswells are epic and winter NW swells are even better.

Simon generating speed/carving power with the sail (sheeted in) and swells

Looks sweet, wish Irish "summer" was as nice a Perth winter

Even river swells are fun to downwind - superfun trying to carve hard and spin out the foil

Short run in 25 knots - 4.5m, 65 wing
Cheers Thomas for the vid !!

I'd be stoked to see downwinding vids from The Gorge crew (USA) this summer

Nice. Do the V3 Wizards have better toe to heel response than earlier model Wizards? It kinda looks like they do. I was thinking maybe with there being less board to move from rail to rail (V3 narrower than earlier models) when turning and carving they might be more responsive that way? Also what river's that? And is it Cottesloe beach? How many spots do you guys have over there and what are the average wind speeds for summer and winter?

Wizards V2 and V3 are similar.
V3 has the option of inboard straps but if the outboard straps are used they are the same distance from the centreline as the V2 straps so heal to toe response is similar. The V3 is narrower so it does catch its rail less when banked over. V3 is easier to uphaul with slightly more volume and releases from the water up onto the foil with less effort due to its parallel rails.
Perth is a great place for foiling. Cottesloe and Leighton beaches offer easy entry and great conditions in our summer sea breezes. Normally at least 3 to 4 days a week of 15 knots plus
The Swan river gets clean wind when it blows from the east.
In winter the wind is not as regular but we still get regular sessions with some of our best yet being in winter. Winter storms are usually associated with strong wind and swell.
Probably the best thing about Perth is the local crew, a great windfoil scene and a booming number of wingfoilers

Comparing W105 to W114 width.
You can see the extra width of the W105 underneath.
W114's not a heap narrower but as Simon says it can make a difference when banked over carving off a swell.
Boards are equal length.

Tried quite a few footstrap options - rubber straps right front & rear and cut down Slingshot half-strap are working pretty well for now.
Thick rubber physio resistance band, super tough, stretches to about double its length.

Yeah right. I thought i compared some specs somewhere that showed more of a difference in width than the actual difference. They must have been wrong or i remembered wrong. I have seen some incorrect specs for Wizards somewhere. Can't remember where.

I ride with my front straps all the way back and no rear strap. Works well for me. I'm using a Naish foil at the moment though as i bought a Naish board to learn on. It works pretty well / feels pretty good, but i don't think it would be perfectly balanced like a Slingshot foil would be. Sometimes my front foot is about 20cm from my back foot (back foot all the way back on board over tuttle/foil screws.) Sometimes it's in in the strap with back foot in roughly same position or back foot forward a bit. I think this all depends on sail size, wind strength, wind direction (tack / angle i'm foiling on). Regardless of where my feet are everything still feels good. My foot positioning might also change when i change stabalizer size, to increase top end wind range, while still being affected by the above variables. I've never really thought about it till now. Sorry, i'm not trying to start a technical discussion, i just thought about all this for the first time through my keyboard and i'm bored. Basically my feet just want to go where they go. I wonder if anyone else has realised they can have a large variation in stance / foot positioning. I wonder if my foot placement would change less with a Slingshot foil. I reckon it might. Either way it's still fun.
