Hi,
I recently found a good deal on a 190 Jp hydrofoil from 2019, the board is 100cm wide. How does a board so wide compare to an 85cm when it comes to low end? I am located in FL so trying to get the most out of light wind days. I will be using it with the IQ foil set up (900) HGO 9.0 and i weight around 100kg.

Thanks!!

Why not get an IQ board as well. Then you have everything carefully matched.

An 85 wide board will lack support for a 9.0. It works but not as comfortable.
You need 91 minimum, also better with your weight.
The wider the board the harder to get it to fly.
The older the shape the harder it is to start flying.
New shapes have different cutouts. Newer shapes can be more technical to start flying.

Also I had a 91cm from 2019, and compaired to a 2021 or more recent model I noticed a big difference when you touch the water during foiling / gybing. They brake much more resulting in more crashes and are more difficult to gybe. My newer board basically bounces right back up in stead of biting the water.

yes i prefer the iq board too but im getting this one for 1/3 of the price of the iq. I always thought that the wider board could get going in lighter winds. the board is just like that one but 190.

The main thing you'll gain from it is leverage over the foil, which in itself will be a vast improvement. I used to own a JP 175 (exactly the board Antoine has there in the photo) and a friend of mine had a 190 like you're looking at. They were built light enough, but they didn't really do much so far as cut outs are concerned. as a result of that i was finding it necessary to set the mast further back than what was probably ideal to help the board to pop in lighter winds. So it was a bit of a dilemma either of being able to get up on the foil earlier, but with a pitchier ride, or work harder to get foiling but with a more stable ride.

i think you will gain from getting the JP, but more from having a more controllable ride than getting going earlier. I'd almost rather have an iq foil than a JP 190 in that respect.

i should add, i've got a 100 wide board now, with some better functioning cut outs, just so you know i'm not just talking out my backside.

As an aside - I have recently worked on two of the JP's and the construction didn't exactly blow my skirt up when I saw it. Actually and the newer freeride one from them too.

Have a really good look if its well used.

As to the u suitability etc, Subsonic is onto it
