In the "old days" when we were all sailing with fins, we had a huge selection of boards (types and sizes), sails (types and sizes), and fins (types and sizes) to choose from. What fun we had in those choices, both good and bad.
Then in 2016 the foils hit the scene. In the first couple years (2016 to 2018 or so) we had a limited selection of foils, and the foils we got had only one configuration. One wing, one stab, one fuse, and one mast. (The early exception was Starboard.) But that all started to change.
Then, from 2019 until now, we have this vast selection of wings, stabs, fuses, and masts from most, if not pretty much all, makers. Look at Slingshot, Starboard, Phantasm, and Moses/Sabfoil, to name just three.
You knew this would happen. Had to. It's the nature of the sport. Foil gear is hitting its stride and getting better all the time. This includes boards and sails, too.
We water-sporters just love to tweak and tune and adjust and experiment.... Just read all the comments on these forums.
It can all be daunting if you are starting out, but boy is it certainly a lot of fun. Lots of people in these forums (fora?) have have enough experience now to help the beginners.
I love this sport.
2016 we all had a go on Horue foil, it was the only wind foil we knew of at that time. Still have a carbon splinter in my foot somewhere from kicking the front wing trying to water start ![]()
I do remember lasting no more than 20-30 minutes at a time, it was using muscles groups that was so different from windsurfing.
Glad to say how equipment has evolved since then...now if the shipping crisis would resolve itself we would have even more kit to choose from ![]()
