I considered myself a pretty good pumper, but this explanation at the recent windsurfing/foiling camp I did in hood river really seemed to help.
Thanks, will have to see if I am doing the upwind turn, but I can pump the kit up into the air using the sail and then sail/foil, in wind that is to low to foil in. But then again, will check to make sure I am not going downwind or crosswind next time. Takes a lot of coordination to sync the sail pumping with the foil pumping, and feels like magic when you do get up in winds to low to foil in.

Britt Viehman of NB Windsurfing has long espoused and taught the importance of that forward push of the sail as generating a lot of power, too.

Very good. He didn't have a windfoil pumping lesson like that when he was here. I have experimented with the forward slice/sheeted in but not as effective yet as whatever it is I do to pump, which honestly I don't think is efficient.
On port tack I have a much easier time with the sheeted in forward slice because it puts my right hand at the rear, which probably helps because I'm right-handed. On starboard tack it feels kind of awkward to have the forward throw because my left hand tends to dominate. I'll have to play with it more because I think I could squeeze another knot or 2 of wind minimum with better technique.

Source? Britt was discussing this with me in 2019. Pretty sure that longboarders have been doing this for years.
