Hey,

I m looking for new fin set up and hesitate between flat foil and foiled fins for 2 to 4 foot, fast beach break waves, if you make 3 turns on a wave you are a legend !

Anyone could share their experience riding both ?

If your considering someone making 3 turns on a wave a legend, your most likely over thinking your fins or you mean the waves your riding are pretty much shutting down pretty damn quick and your still probably over thinking your fins. Personally I think surface area, stiffness & rake more important...but hey i'm no pro or legend and growing up fins were already on the board so never a consideration unless you lost one.

Different fin types do make a huge difference and there is also a huge difference in waves, peoples weight and surfboard type/size. If your surfing fast breaking pretty much closeout beachies I'd go quads or a large set of thrusters. I like plenty of drive and tend to surf shorter boards in larger waves. I like Shapers S9's thrusters all round for over head & a 1/2 and switch out the rear fin for a solus back small cutaway. Thats my favourite setup for HS Hypto and lovebuzz atm...the solus set on boards with deep concaves goes great in nice peeling waves and AM2 are a good old favourite.

If your under 75kg you can consider medium fins. A lot of younger blokes like KS fins and I'm sure KS enjoys making more money and building more wave pools for us to drool over...personally though, I'd recommend choosing a fin type. Futures or FCS2 and just getting medium, large and quad sets you can mix and match. Boards with sharper rail and or more concave won't need as much fin or fatter/smaller waves.

At the end of the day you will end up with a few fin sets to play with...havagood1

Instead of a larger fin try one with more rake and a larger base...the further the fin hangs over the back of the base the more drive you will get.

There's way more going on than flat and dual foiled...are you riding a quad or a thruster...what size board...whats the tail width (12 inches from the tail)...whats the toe in and cant like on your fins...is it a tight fin cluster....what are you trying to achieve more speed?

Hey, I am riding the channel island fever in 6'2 19 1/2 2 9/16, 32.4L, i am 188 and 84KG, thruster fin set up.

I do have the AM2 honeycomb (older version), it s flat foil, i like them when waves are 3 foot and above and when the wave has power, good feeling in that case ! other than that, I found the board slow straight away when under 3 foot and without much power from the wave.

I'm guessing you mean 188cm, so like just over 6'1. I'm 6'2 and 82kg, so a little taller and a little lighter. Taller surfers generally like more surface area in their fins coz the added height when turning you end up pushing more on your fins if that makes any sense. AM2s are already pretty big, but the S9's which I love dwarf them when you put them side by side. You could give them a go...but then on the other hand, your just talking about one board. Considering another board, one of the many small wave options. Foam under the chest, wide, very little rocker. Would cost more, but would be far more effective in tackling summer mush

Yeah I tend to surf sectiony waves, so wanna burst around sections, but also want pivot. Pretty happy with my quiver of fins right now

When I got the 6'1 psychedelic germ I only had AM2 & solus in futures. Those fins didn't gell in sucky overhead & larger waves. I was spewing & thought the board was a dud, coz the solus were awesome on the firewire hellfire I had before it. But the hellfire had really deep concaves and step rails. I went out and grabbed the biggest fins I could find, the S9's & they've been great. I now swap to AM'2 or change the rear fin when I want more release. But yeah, pretty happy with the fins I have right now. Basically medium, large & xtra large.

Have a couple of 5 fin sets & odds & ends in FCS, but last few boards have been future box's which I prefer.

TBH fins are only going to make a 5-10% difference...if you really want something that operates in small slow waves you want something with a wider tail and a flatter rocker

Tux is spot on to a degree but when I put some Rasta bamboo quads on my tomo nano the difference was amazing it was like I'd installed a turbo heaps faster and held speed through turns not sure if they are flat foiled or have inside foil but definitely changed the board for the better in 3-5 ft waves

Thanks for the input - So for fun i got the Dane Reynold Black Panthere, honestly did not get enough good waves around here to judge and I got the Blackstix 3.0 as well so we ll see (both second hand) -

You are very right about using another board when it s small, that is why 6 weeks ago I ordered one of those very short wide board, and Ricardo, I bought as well the Rasta bamboo and the controllers, I ll try them both with the new board that should come this week and see which ones works best !

I got pretty lucky lately with 2nd hand fins, did not cost me a fortune for those 4 sets.
