Not good, apparently a local guy doing his regular swim.

Wife was on the beach but nothing could be done to help him.

Thoughts are with those close to him. Sad day.

That is not confirmed. It just happened to be a shark filmed in the area after the event. It could have just as easily be drawn into the area..

The media is all over this. Its a shame, but why is it so much more news worthy than the poor surfer who drowned at Byron a few months back that hardly got a mention

JB - if you saw the crap that they run on the news over east here on a daily basis it is no wonder that this is big news - add to the fact that its at Byron and it involves a death, a family, a shark and it has the making of a top news story for days and days. Just last week there was a newspaper with a front cover of a bloke about to get his head chopped off. Then on Macs fav show they had a 12 min informercial on fresh food at Woolies. Seriously its absolutely terrible the news here. This story will dominate for 48hrs unless someone does something really stupid - like Clive Palmer * 10 !!

Re fatal shark attack in Byron - this is the first fatal shark attack at Byron Bay since 1993 by all accounts - not last year - maybe you were thinking Gracetown. Most times no one really gives a crap about what is happening over west - living in the east is like living in yr own little world most of the time - especially when the NRL finals are on I know people in the west think they are important but in the eyes of the media on the east coast its like you are from another country !!!!

I was talking about the guy who drowned at Bryon bay only a few months back. he was surfing and got caught in a rip and drowned. It didn't make the news in WA really, but when their is a shark involved, some media sites are on to their 5th new story/update for the day..

Surfers die all the time. Three in Indo in the last few months, a guy down south at Smiths, the guy in Bryon and now this. But only when their is a shark, is it national news..

JB has been banging on about sharks at every opportunity and using people's death I find in very bad taste

I have said it before to him and will continue to.

People have died.
It is disgusting to use people's dead family members to push a self serving point on something that you've never been touched by.

I think you've got it all wrong. My point is actually rather funny when you obviously agree with me. WHY is it okay for the media to use this persons death to sell stories Why is this more news worthy than a drowning at the exact same beach SP.

I find your tone in bad taste TBH and as was said I'm just pointing out the obvious. Your just trying to make this a personal attack. I won't bother than this reply because you've shown your level of maturity..

We're not agreeing and it's not personal at all.

I don't like you Or anyone else using dead people to push a point of view.

I find it quite strange that you would use a families pain of losing someone to push an issue you have demonstrated in the past that you have a very strong opinion on.

And no the point is not the same.
You know about the other deaths cause you saw it on the news. Same as the shark story.

The 2 blokes in Bali was big news here and still is. No more than sharks.

My view on a few things mentioned above.

I believe the shark filmed from the chopper after the attack which is in full view between the chopper and the deaseased is the same shark that attacked. It just hung around for a very long time after the event.Speaking with locals over time, they tell me that there are often shark sightings at The Pass, Wategos and even more often at Tallows.

Media, yes its big news here, why?Byron 1 hour flight from Sydney,a 1 hour drive from Brisbane,a 30 minute drive from the gold coast,Byron is always full of international tourists and weekend get away people. Its not a remote destination its a very popular holiday hot spot.I was told that the surfer who drowned had just completed a three day surf coach course and was not a compedent surfer and the swell was huge that day, this is what I've been told by a lady who visited my place of work the week after the event, she lives on the beach where the drowning occurred.

Bali, yes Queensland has lost 2 in the space of a week over there, one heart attack and the other who has not been found to my knowledge. Australia also lost a great shaper this week,Dave Boyd from Imperial Surfboards, all in all a very tragic time for Australian surfers families and freinds. I had a guy at the gym come up to me tonight and tell me they thought of me because the guy has the same christian name and was in my age bracket. They being none surfers said fk that I agreed, but added, how many people died today in NSW's in car crashes?i also added you saver in the water than driving your car to work.

I'm at an age where I find myself drawn to the death notices in our paper each week and I would think ok he or she had a long life but I also note the ones taken so early too early.I say enjoy life for what it is love everyone in your life, because life is and can be too short.

Condolences to all family and freinds mentioned above, may they rest in peace .

sad news, sad for the family.

its news worthy, why there's even a thread about it on the longboard forum.

people talk about it, you can't blame the media for reporting it. going on about for days on end and the certain weekend paper articles is what's distasteful.

that must be dreadful for family and friends

Hey JB - sorry misread yr initial question - did not see the word drowning - whoops. In terms of newsworthiness - it was the leading story in NSW but it did not get anywhere near as much airtime as Wills and Kate's new edition to the family just to give you some perspective.

No matter what your opinions are, no matter what your bias is, just for one moment try and put yourselves in the shoes of that family tonight.

A husband, father, brother or uncle has been lost to a family. I am sure that I wouldn't want to be in their house tonight.

Kind thoughts never go astray.

Pass some on.
