Looking for some ideas around some options for a new 9'1. I snapped my wife's mal a while back and have since picked up a good 9'6 single fin traditional log from Chris Garratt. While I am enjoying the new board heaps I think the extra length as well as the rolled rails through the tail etc have not been so user friendly for my wife who is reasonably capable but not exactly Pam Burridge.

So I'm looking for a 9'1 that is a bit more performance oriented (so I can also get some good use) while also being reasonable forgiving and also durable so it can be given a good hiding when the swell is up and the current on the points is strong. The sister inlaws Takama is currently providing some inspiration.

I'm based on the Gold Coast and ideally would be aiming for a good second hand board as most of the newies seem around the $1,500 mark which is a bit of stretch.

Looking for suggestions on models for the below list along with other options and possibly even advice on the whereabouts of a suitable second handy. Over to the brains trust . . . .

Current Thinking
Clearwater
Beau Young
Firewire
McTavish
Takeda Custom
Van Straalen
Takayama

Cheers, Herb

Welcome to the madhouse!!!

Drop in and have a chat to Steve Del Rosso at Clearwater, his Whalebone model could be just what you're after, never heard a bad word said about it.

You could also add Goddard to your list of shapers, Ron's worth a chat too also, well priced as a bonus.

Another thought, maybe check with Chrispy........ was the BeerGarden board for sale?

All will have something close to what you want.
For clearer help good to know your weight, experience and preferred surf conditions.
Gumtree has just about anything you'd want and priced to suit.
Beau Young look good at SW priced new nearer to 2nd hand price of the custom shapers.
But if you want to see beautifully built high end boards visit the mctavish lolly shop.

Thanks Dowls. Most of our surfing is done around Currumbin Alley. I'm 6', 85 kgs and can throw a mal around reasonably well.

The better half is around 5'10" and tips the scales around 65 kgs. Her background is more in paddling clubby boards so she is good in the surf but intermediate on a mal.

Cheers, HV

A Sunova JR or a Firewire TJ would have good durability. But finding one second hand would probably be hard.

Since your in Qld, there's always plenty of good LB deals on gumtree. Annoys the hell out of me all the time

I'd just go a respected brand for about for about $600. CW are great boards, but your pretty spoilt for great LB shapers over there.

Edit: I'd snap that 9'3 whale bone up from Chrispy. I have one, they're awesome boards!

Drool.

Back to the OP, I have had a couple of boards from TheSurfboardWarehouse. They work very well, are well built and very well priced. I haven't surfed any of their true longboards, but I am looking at purchasing one sight unseen and leaving at my mothers in Queensland so I don't have to travel with a longboard - that's how confident I am in their R&D. Check them out for yourself. They have an online shop and retail outlets all over the Goldie and elsewhere.
