As the title states the mrs is keen to sup.
Just wondering what size i should buy her, it is a surprise present so cant take her to shop with me.
She is 55kgs and around 170cm. And quite weak haha.
She tried it out on a indo surf trip, and didnt even fall off till she tried to get a wave on it.
Now i dont think she will want a wave orientated board, but a crusier that could still be used in super small stuff.
Hopefully ive given enough info for some advice as i know nothing about stand ups.
Cheers guys
I bought my wife a 9'5" Alana from Warwick at Kite Republic SUP at St Kilda Baths.
It was her first board (after riding one of mine a few times) and was also a surprise. She is about the same height size as your Mrs.
How does she get on with the Alana? She loves it, a lot. Its plenty stable for a new paddler and has given her loads of confidence on a board. Couple that with the fact that the girly graphics are just awesome you would do better than getting her one..
Oh, did I mention you need to see Warwick at Kite Republic SUP too ;-)
My wife is about the same height / weight, got a 9'6 Fanatic Diamond a month ago. She is loving it. Exact same layup as the guys model (Fly I think ?) but chicks colour and pink fins!
My wife has a 9'5" Naish Mana - non girly Alana - she loves it. Never surfed before now she loves getting into little waves so don't under estimate where she may want to go with her board!
9'5 AllWave, plenty of volume and width and best of all you can use it too, if you want to have a play on the dark side.
I'd go for something in the 8 foot range.
It will be lighter and easier to carry. Boards in the 8 foot range can still be used for cruising. They don't have to be 9 or 10 foot board.
For example I have an 8'5 X 29, it's 112L, I'm 179cm, weigh 75kgs and use this board from ankle high to whatever high it gets in Margs. I cruise the river and even fish off it. When my daughter was 8 I'd even sit her in front of me and paddle it on the river. That was 5 years ago and now she uses it herself.
So that's just a bit of information on a board that size. You could even get an 8'5 X 30 or 9'0 X 30.
Because you are in WA go see the crew at Stand Up Paddle Sports in Osborne Park.
Hope this helps YEW![]()

No short answer here from me
This is a topic that I have been passionate about for years..... but never had the right board to recommend.
IMO, this has been an industry oversight for years
Greenroom hits on a lot of great points... you don't need a big board to have fun!
I have always flat-watered my surf SUPs ... I frequently paddled 10k on my 8'10 Allwave or my 9'5 Mana's
Lots of women I know race, and love it.......
but..... I know a lot more, that just want something manageable. Period.
They don't want to struggle loading and unloading. They don't care about going fast.
They just want something LIGHT, that they can easily throw on, or in the car by themselves.... without drama....
They want a board that is stable, easy to paddle and maybe bring the pup or kids along.
Casual paddling ... just a nice morning jaunt with friends or nature.
It would be great to have something the kids can manage as well.
I have seen many frustrated women that got sold a 12'6 raceboard..... trying to get it on the roof alone in a breeze.
Or a bargain brand all-arounder that weighs in at 15kg
The board ends up in the rafters of the garage, gathering dust.
So.... I was very stoked when I got my hands on a Sunova 9'5 SURF in the ECO build
It is THE board I have been talking about for years!!!!!
Affordable, LIGHT, beautiful, stable, great handle, wide enough for a total novice, or bring the kid or the pup.
The rails and outline are full enough for stability and nice paddling.
Small enough to throw in the back of the SUV... or easily on the roof racks.
And it's only 10.4 kg (23 lbs)
Tino (from Sunova) asked me to pick up a board when I was on the road and hold on to it.
When I took it out of the box, and picked it up, I freaked..... so light... perfect size......"THIS is the board I have been looking for!"
I have sooooo many women ask about boards, and I have never had the board, that fit all the criteria.... until now!
I paddled it right away and was impressed..... it paddled nicely, even with a big lug like me on it!.... for women, this board will be a very solid cruiser!
The light weight makes it very responsive to each stroke, which is a big deal if you are not a 100 kg guy.
I didn't really think about surfing it because it was fairly wide, and a floater.
On a small day last week, I threw on the head cam and said....aahhh jeeze, I better see if it surfs.
The vid is great.... I start laughing on the 1st wave, because the board is so much fun. (video won't upload to youtube... I'll try again)
My 3rd session was in some good waves 3 days ago..... my friend wanted to ride it again, then we swapped after a bit.
I was blown away with how much fun this board is in good waves! .... super easy, turns great, good speed.... it simply has a very nice feel to it.
And it carves a pretty mean turn for a 160 liter floater!!!
The ECO build seems awesome....
the price comes in well below most brands.....
most importantly, the weight is definitely much less.
I am seriously, a HUGE fan of this board.... it is the surprise of the winter for me..... I will be surfing it a LOT..... and I have a pile of boards to pick from.
Soooooo stoked to have my friends try this board .....
Paddle, surf or sail.....THIS is a great board for the ladies..... and me, apparently
Guys.... this is a board worth looking at if you want some float and stability in the surf..... but that's another thread!
Available in XXX tec as well
Trying to find the perfect board for your wife is like trying to find the perfect wife.
Good luck with that one!
Sorry off topic, but.... STC - far out man, intense. We in Sydney have it easy and are admittedly soft. If temps are below 15C ...nah too cold not going near the water.
After every water session here the inviolable law is You Must have a beer. I just want to know what do you have in your region after launching from snow in a head-to-toe suit? Jaegermeister? Rum??
So.... I was very stoked when I got my hands on a Sunova 9'5 SURF in the ECO build

Yeah - But does it come in pink?
Looks good supthecreek...9.5 sunova.
I love snow ..Im guessing its -4 c....ouch ..
it got down to 22 c last night ..here .. I'd have to toughen up ..before I head out .
with the right gear ..

Yes it does if you ask for ... You need pink we make that. Just need to wait a little longer.
Tino
Well OKaaay then. I think we have a ladies winner. Yeeeew! Presume you can get me one shipped to Nga Zilland for my wife?
