Its been in their rule book for a while. Imo they are realising that the potential is greater then they had forseen and its time to act on it.

Sounds good in theory but...... "another world championship"?

I don't want to be negative about this as it is recognition that the sport is growing but there are a few things that don't make sense to me.

Firstly another world championship? Snowboarding slopestyle has just been introduced to the next winter Olympics. Currently there are two world tours that now have to try and combine their different points systems and associations to create yet another qualifying system. Why create a new event when we already have a budding world tour?

Peru? While I admit I have never been there and probably wont ever get there, surely a more appropriate place could have been chosen? Hawaii in summer? Seems like the majority of the worlds best paddlers are there at some point. Good luck to anyone trying to get sponsors to pay for a 14', 12'6 and possibly a surf sup to Peru, imagine the excess baggage on that!

I guess you could argue that the ISA is a more legitimate body (been running World Amateur Surfing Titles since 1964) than the Waterman's League with it's 'tour' of industry sponsored riders. Perhaps this would be seen as the Amateur Worlds as opposed to the 'Pro' Version as in Surfing.

I don't get the involvement of racing though, it being a Surfing body.

Peru has cooking surf by the way.

Agree that the Waterman's league tour isn't exactly open for all comers and the ISA would definitley attract the best of the best through qualification series etc.

I've seen photos of that area and for sure they have good waves, just seems a little out of the way.

I wonder how they define sprint and long course racing and what board sizes are involved.

The ISA concept is that participants come through there national surfing systems (i.e club comps, into regional/state comps, then Surfing Australia in our case) this promotes the sport in a non paid competition format. Where as the ASP and Watermans League are paid professionals (eg win a comp win money)

I think the adding of racing is important in this circumstance as SUP is a sport not just about the surfing side. Surfing could do the same if they wanted to they could have paddle races this would take them back to the old days (using racing malibu slsc) but I don't ever see that happening
